Anyone remember the Y2K scare prior to transitioning into the current millennium?
Moving into a new century had many people on edge. It wasn’t the typical New Year’s Eve celebration.
Nobody knew what would happen when the ball dropped that year. Would it be chaos and confusion? Or business as usual?
The Y2K glitch refers to potential computer errors related to the formatting and storage of calendar data for dates in and after the year 2000.
Many programs represented four-digit years with only the final two digits, making the year 2000 indistinguishable from 1900. Computer systems’ inability to distinguish dates correctly had the potential to bring down worldwide infrastructures for industries ranging from banking to air travel.
In the years leading up to the turn of the century, the public gradually became aware of the Y2K scare, and individual companies predicted the global damage caused by the bug would require anything between $400 million and $600 billion to rectify.
A lack of clarity regarding the potential dangers of the bug led many to stock up on food, water and arms, purchase backup generators and withdraw large sums of money in anticipation of a computer-induced apocalypse.
Contrary to public expectations, few major errors actually occurred in 2000 – primarily because of the preemptive action of many computer programmers and information technology experts.
Then-President Bill Clinton labeled Y2K as the first challenge of the 21st Century successfully met.
I recall my pastor addressing the Y2K situation prior to January 1 with a set of Bible verses.
Here are some of them: “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
“And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
“Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
“Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
“(For all these things do the Gentiles seek) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” – Matthew 6:25-34
Those verses say so much. Really, the primary need for us is to get right with God, obey His Word and trust in His provision.
His ways are so much higher than our ways – as high as heaven is above the earth. He knows how to take care of His children.
