Here in Equality, and surrounding areas, the nights are getting cooler; however the days are still above 90 degrees, and I am so over that!
I guess I will have to wait another couple of weeks before the days are below 90 degrees. I am eager for fall weather to get here, and I truly hope fall weather lingers for many months.
I have exciting personal news; my grandson who joined the Air Force straight out of high school at the age of 17 has been promoted to Staff Sergeant and still can’t buy himself a beer to celebrate. Not that he wants to drink beer, but the fact that he has achieved this level at such a young age makes me proud.
He is proud to serve and has taken his duties quite seriously and trained, studied, served, and proved he is ready. He is also studying college courses while working on his military career. I am a very proud grandma.
Something in my neighborhood is not making me happy or proud. The speed of some drivers flying down our road exceeds 45 mph, which is standard for county roads. And ours is a gravel and tar, narrow county road, so the faster they go the more they tear it up, as well as putting residents in danger.
I fear crossing the road to get the mail or pulling out of my driveway as they fly by so fast with no regard to the residents. Several residents have questioned if the speed limit could be lowered, but will a sign slow down the folks in the next county trying to get up to Highway 9 like they are running for their lives?
We won’t know until we try, and that takes the residents on our county road to sign a request to lower the speed limit and present it to the county commissioners. I wonder how long that will take.
Community activities that are available in Equality and Nixburg area:
- The Equality quilting group meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some embroider, crochet and other needle arts. And yes, we still meet every week!
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale is held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Highway 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9 in Nixburg.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every Friday starting at 10 a.m.
