On Tuesday evening, in accordance with the Presidential Order, Gov. Kay Ivey directed flags be lowered across the state to half-staff effective at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, through sunset on Tuesday, September 1, in memory of legendary American singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and humanitarian Dolly Parton who passed away on August 25, at the age of 80.
Gov. Ivey’s flag directive from Tuesday reads, “In accordance with the Presidential Order, I am directing flags be lowered across the state of Alabama to half-staff effective at 6 p.m. today through sunset, Tuesday, September 1, 2026, in memory of legendary American singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and humanitarian Dolly Parton who passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80.
“Dolly Parton literally lived the life of the classic American success story. In ‘Coat of Many Colors’
fashion, Dolly was born one of 12 children in a one-room house without electricity. She was
destined for a stellar career at a very early age. As noted in the Ken Burns ‘County Music’ film,
Dolly began writing songs at age 5 and ‘the day after becoming the first in her family to graduate
high school, she packed a cardboard suitcase and boarded a bus headed for Nashville. ‘I had a
dream,’ she said, ‘and a talent, I thought. And I really believed it was going to happen.’ Dolly fulfilled her dream many times over during her 50-plus year career, not only rising to the top of country music stardom, but also capturing the hearts of Americans as a movie star, successful businesswoman, and for her unlimited generosity for those in need while possessing a heart of gold. I was proud to partner with Dolly in establishing her successful Imagination Library, providing free books for young readers all across Alabama. Dolly was more than a songbird; she was a living legend. I know I join all Alabamians when I say, ‘We will always love you, Dolly.’”
As per President Trump’s order to honor Dolly Parton, flags are to be lowered across the state of
Alabama to half-staff effective 6 p.m. August 25 through sunset Tuesday, September 1, at which point all flags should be raised back to full staff.
