On Saturday, June 27, at approximately 6 p.m., the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) Southern K-9 unit received information about an individual flying a drone from Interstate 65 toward Holman Correctional Facility.
ADOC K-9 responded with assistance from the Atmore Police Department. The suspect, identified as former inmate Edward Knight, was taken into custody without incident.
The drone, which had a package attached, was landed safely and confiscated. The suspect was interviewed by ADOC agents, arrested and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and two counts of illegal drone operation.
During the investigation, agents learned that Knight had other contraband at his residence of 703
Springville Road, Apt. N, in Birmingham. ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division, K-9 and
Narcotics executed a search warrant at the residence and gathered additional evidence related to this
incident.
The ADOC investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be pending.
