With the end of another school year in sight, local agencies and organizations are gearing up for summer activities while youth and families are planning ways to spend their summer.
From free meals for youth to summer reading programs and events for families, there’s something for everyone to help maximize their summer while their children are out of school.
Coosa County Schools announces that it will have the Summer Nutrition Program for Kids this year through the month of June. The program provides free breakfast and lunch meals for children under the age of 18, and it is available from June 2-27, Monday through Thursday each week.
Breakfast will be available from 8 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
To help better serve area youth, there are two locations for these free meals. They will be available at Coosa Central High School, located at 97 Coosa County Road 75 in the Hanover community, and at Goodwater Parks and Recreation, located at 166 Harris Street in Goodwater.
For more information on the Summer Nutrition Program for Kids, contact Child Nutrition Program Director Pamela Jones at the school at 256-377-4913, extension 4.
Youth and their families can also look forward to enjoying Summer Reading programs at both of Coosa County’s public libraries.
The Goodwater Public Library will hold its program every Tuesday in June from 10 to 11 a.m. For more information, contact Goodwater Library at 256-839-5741.
The Rockford Public Library will hold its program at 2:30 p.m. on June 13, July 11 and July 25. Snacks will be furnished after the program, and area youth are encouraged to come join the fun at the library this summer.
The Rockford Library also has a free little library box stationed outside Rockford Town Hall that everyone can enjoy year round.
For more information on the Summer Reading Program, contact Rockford Library at 256-377-4922.
The Rockford Public Library is also holding an event again this year to highlight the library and what it has to offer while also providing fun, food and giveaways for youth and families. The event will also feature a bounce house with water slide.
The library’s summer event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 27, at the Rockford Playground.
Another summer activity for youth this year is a summer camp held by the Goodwater Youth Development Parks and Recreation Center, located at 166 Harris Street.
The summer camp will be held on June 2 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $40 per child for registration, and the day will include breakfast, lunch, arts and crafts, and much more.
For more information on the summer camp, contact Director Sharonna Hayes at 256-743-1252.
Additionally, individuals and families alike can come out to the Town of Rockford’s Spring Fling on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The day’s festivities will include vendors, food trucks, music, and an inflatable water slide for the youth. The town encourages everyone to come out and join the fun around Jackson Street and Nixburg Road at the Rockford Playground.
For more information or to register as a vendor, contact Rockford Town Hall at 256-377-4911.
In addition to these community events, various area churches will also soon be announcing Vacation Bible School programs.
