Summer heat is here; at least that is how I feel about it. I did get my garden in. In fact, because the plant sales were so dismal at Jenny’s General, I had to plant more than I had planned.
So, no more plants, because it seems the older customers who stopped by didn’t care that they are locally grown and organic; all they want are 6-packs. So, they head off driving 30 minutes to a big box store to buy plants grown in chemicals so they can get six chemically dependent plants for their garden. But that is their choice, no matter what the consequences.
While I was on travel for my full-time job, my husband watched the store with our grandson. Not a single customer stopped by, making him wonder why we even keep the store open. Much like last summer, I don’t see sales being enough to keep the power bill paid.
And Coosa Live had one event this month. A band from Alexander City asked to play, and a good crowd showed up, all from outside of the area. Only three locals stopped in and said it was great.
At the homestead we have been setting traps for the predators that have taken eggs, a turkey hen and two ducks. We did trap an opossum, but fear there is still another predator avoiding our traps but still causing trouble. I am not sure what else to do as I have repaired the fences, set the traps and cleared areas they might find refuge in.
I know many folks advise getting a large livestock dog, but that would take a lot of training, and I just don’t have time for that. Others suggest getting a donkey, mule, or emu, and I just might consider the emu.
While out of town I did miss the Neighborhood Watch meeting. I heard that Dave Dial made another great meal for the community. I hope you plan on attending May’s Neighborhood Watch meeting, May 24, and join your community in food, fellowship and community updates and safety awareness.
Once again, the EVFD will be selling butts/ribs for Memorial Day weekend this month. Reserve yours today by contacting Jackie at 256-786-1169 or Jean at 256-537-1884. Call today because EVFD has sold out the last few years, and as you know, it’s really good! Thanks for your continued support.
First Saturday is tomorrow, May 3, so get making those baked goods to donate to the bake sale. Donations for breakfast, lunch, bake sale, and rummage sale all go to support the efforts needed to keep our fire department well equipped and growing to support our community. It starts at 8 a.m. and closes at 1 p.m. Come early and stay or come early and return for lunch. Either way you won’t be disappointed with the fellowship and support of our community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
