David A. Bass, Rockford Church of Christ
None of us like the prospect of dying, and few like to think about their own funeral. But, have you ever stopped to think about what the preacher will say at your funeral?
The life that you are now living will determine what the “honest” preacher will say at your funeral. If you are honest and are not afraid of the truth, underline the correct answer in the following sentences:
- The deceased (was, was not) a faithful Christian, and, therefore, we (have, have not) a reasonable hope of heaven for him/her.
- His/her family (knew, knew not) him/her to be a prayerful person and of sincere devotion to God.
- He/she was a person who regularly (attended, ignored) the worship services and (could, could not) be counted on to serve to the best of their ability for the Lord.
- He/she (occasionally, always, never) spent time studying the Bible.
- He/she was always (concerned, unconcerned) about the lost, poor, the afflicted, the homeless, and always (encouraged, discouraged) missionary efforts.
- He/she (loved, did not love) his/her fellow man, and it was evident by the way he/she treated him.
- He/she was a (true friend, two-faced) to those who trusted him/her, and always made a real contribution to the (happiness, unhappiness) of people wherever he/she went.
- His/her family (rejoiced, dreaded) to see him/her come home.
- He/she (possessed, did not possess) honesty, integrity, humility, sincerity, dependability, and love.
- He/she knew the truth and (tried, did not try) to obey it.
- In short, he/she (was, was not) an asset to the church, his/her family, his/her community, and his/her God.
- We (will, will not) miss him/her very much, because he/she (was, was not) the type of person every one loved.
- He/she (did, did not) fight a good fight, finish the course, keep the faith: henceforth there (is, is not) laid up for him/her a crown of righteousness.
Honestly, how does it read? My friends, we are living our funeral each and every day. If we don’t like what we see, it is not too late to change. The Bible says, “Behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). (Credit for much of this material must be given to Arnott Lowder.)
