Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Brr, it has been cold this week, and what a storm that blew through and left us without power for a while.
It has changed things in Equality as the Rodger’s Shrubbery greenhouse received damage for the third year in a row after years of standing strong. We have made the decision to just take the greenhouse down and close Rodger’s Shrubbery. Business was not all that good; folks only stopped if we spent thousands of dollars on plants that we had to care for every day of the week until sold, and many didn’t. Folks just wanted to look, but rarely purchased.
Rodger’s Shrubbery went to just seasonal spring plants, but again, half the plants that were purchased because of wholesale minimum buys were never purchased by customers and rotted in the pots, which is no good for business.
With spring right on the doorstep Coosa Fancy Organic Farm is open for its 2025 spring CSA. CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.” This system offers customers the opportunity to support their local farms and producers via an initial buy-in price, which is then returned through weekly shares of fresh produce. This helps the farm by providing the initial capital needed for operation costs.
In the early spring members can expect plenty of nourishing fresh lettuces, leafy greens (such as arugula, their popular Asian greens mix and kale), harukei turnips, different varieties of radishes, carrots, and broccolini.
As the season continues, you can begin to expect to see foods such as their super popular sashimi cucumbers, cherry and heirloom tomatoes and more! Help support Coosa Fancy and enjoy 10 weeks of freshly harvested, organically grown seasonal produce! Spring 2025 Season begins April 5.
Coosa County Live has Karaoke Night today, February 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
The Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held Thursday, February 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Equality Fire Department Lodge Hall building. Please join the community in food and fellowship while getting the sheriff’s report and sharing safety information.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
