Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
Today is Valentine’s Day! For many people it’s just another day, so what is special about it? It is an annual event to celebrate love and friendship. Candy, flowers and cards will be sent to express love for someone close to the heart. Today, it is linked to thoughts of romance with Cupid shooting love arrows, sharing sweet messages and many proposals.
However, it remains a mystery of the complete story. It has been attributed to several different priests and saints named Valentine. The origin goes back to ancient Rome where the feast of Lupercalia was celebrated from February 13 to 15 to please the fertility god Lupercus.
Then Pope Gelasius I in the fifth century in an effort to expel pagan rituals changed it from revelry to a day of romantic love. About 1913, it became a Hallmark holiday with mass produced valentines. From there we have the romance and commercialism of today.
The free tax clinic at Rockford continues each Wednesday through April 9. It is located at the Rockford Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on U.S. Highway 231 north of the four-way stop. Someone will be there from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling the Alexander City location at 256-234-0347. Be sure to tell them you want an appointment for the Rockford location. Walk-ins are welcome, also.
Don’t forget about the Coosa County Historical Society’s first quarter meeting on Sunday, February 23, at the Rockford Senior Center at 2 p.m. We will be discussing cleaning the “old rock jail” prior to opening it in April. Also, we need volunteers to staff it on Sunday afternoons. If you are interested, please contact me for more details.
To become a member or renew your membership, you can mail a check to P.O. Box 5, Rockford, AL 35136 for $15. Please include your email to receive the newsletter or add $5 to receive printed copies, as well as your address.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for March 1. That is the next Bingo night for the Richville Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, March 1, so make plans to come out for a good time. It starts at 6 p.m., and you play 20 games for $10. There are a variety of prizes to choose from, so everyone who wins can find something.
Continuing Bible verses about love, this week’s verse is found in Proverbs 17:17. It reads, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a difficult time.”
Solomon writes about a true friend being loving and helpful even in difficult circumstances. A friend will stand by your side. That is the definition of a true friend rather than a “fair-weather” friend. A fair-weather friend is someone that acts like a friend until things are difficult, then they are gone. A true friend will always be there to help you or console you. Whatever you need, they’re there for you. So, choose what type of friend you are wisely, because you might need a true friend yourself.
Be in prayer for all those that are sick in our community. But also, think about giving someone a call just to say hello; it will make a difference in their day. Many times when we go out to spread blessings to others, it’s us that gets the blessing.
