Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Oh, I thought last week was cold, but this past week was even colder. Good thing I put in more insulation; however, it still needs more.
I have been working on windows, not something one would do in the winter, but there are storm windows up and the weight pockets are open, and I need to get them closed. So been replacing sash cord and getting the upper sashes loose as they were nailed shut and caulked in.
So far, the windows that I have gotten back into working order are tighter and have less drafts than previously. 100-year-old craftsmanship at its finest. I have some windows that need new glazing before I put them back into place and perhaps add in some extra weather strip just to ensure a great seal, and I will be able to close the weight pockets.
These windows are not designed like other old windows I have encountered. They do not have traditional weight pockets within the casing itself as the weights are accessed via the trim boards instead.
My neighbor and I have been taking a 2-mile walk every morning before I start my workday. One would think walking a county road at 5:30 in the morning would be a quiet activity; however, we have discovered that there are more folks racing up our road to get to Highway 9, some of them driving well over the speed limit. Many of them do not have cars registered in Coosa County, so they come up from Elmore to get to Highway 9, or perhaps just to the gas station to get some morning coffee. Last week there were close to a dozen cars just between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m., and I didn’t even realize that many folks lived up the road that still had daily work commute.
Coosa County Live has a live musical performance today, January 24, 7 to 9 p.m. The building is heated, and there will be hot coffee available.
While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Bingo is the last Saturday of the month, January 25, at 4 p.m. at the Equality Volunteer Fire Department Lodge, if there is enough participation. You will notice the large sign on the front of the building identifying it as the Lodge. Bingo cards are $1 each with all proceeds going to support the Equality Volunteer Fire Department. Come join in for an afternoon of fun and fellowship.
Don’t forget there is no First Saturday fundraiser in February, and it will be back up and running the first Saturday in March.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
