Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
It has been pretty cold lately. But fortunately not the heavy winter stuff cities and towns north of us got.
My friend and coworker in Huntsville said they got 6 inches of snow, but only 4 inches stuck to the ground after getting some freezing rain. My son in Cullman said many businesses shut down because of the winter storm they received. We did get some freezing rain, and my husband saw a few snowflakes.
After feeling too much of the cold, I mustered up the motivation to install some additional insulation, and wow, what a difference it made in the indoor temperatures of our home.
We had some bating insulation, but I added a layer of reflective insulation, and the effect was almost immediate. While l was at it, I did encounter another problem area that needs to be fixed, but seems par for the course with this old house.
I would encourage anyone who is able to add a layer of insulation, even if it is just a layer of plastic over the windows, to help keep the drafts out and the heat in, as well as save on your energy budget. A little bit can go a long way over these cold days.
Please take care if using a space heater; never use an extension cord, and never leave them unattended. I know they sure come in handy on the coldest of days but can be dangerous. And as much as we love our volunteer fire department, it is best to see them at their Monday training or First Saturday fundraisers and not your beloved home.
Personally, if I have a need for a space heater, I prefer the oil-filled radiant heaters, no exposed elements and they seem to be more energy efficient.
Coosa County Live’s Karaoke night is today, January 17, 7 to 9 p.m. The building is heated, and there will be hot coffee available.
While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
The Neighborhood Watch meeting is the fourth Thursday, January 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Please plan to attend and participate in this community event including a potluck, safety updates, sheriff report, and fellowship with neighbors.
Bingo is the last Saturday of the month, January 25, at 4 p.m. at the Equality Volunteer Fire Department Lodge, if there is enough participation. You will notice the large sign on the front of the building identifying it as the Lodge.
Bingo cards are $1 each with all proceeds going to support the Equality Volunteer Fire Department. Come join in for an afternoon of fun and fellowship.
