Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
Christmas is almost here! Hard to believe that this is the last column before Christmas. Where has the year gone?
I hope everyone is ready because next week is the big day, Christmas 2024. I have a couple more gifts to get and need to wrap some. I finished getting Christmas cards in the mail and presents to my family in Texas. It’s been a busy week.
School finished up this week for the holidays until January 7. I know teachers are excited for a break; not sure how parents are feeling having the kids at home for the next couple of weeks.
The next Bingo for the Richville Volunteer Fire Department will be in January. I’ll share the date in the next column.
The Richville Neighborhood Watch will have its next meeting on Thursday, January 2, at 6:30. Please put on the calendar and make plans to attend to see what’s going on in our community.
Providence Baptist Church held its Christmas program. We had a good time and great fellowship. If you don’t have a church, we would love to have you come visit. Services are Sunday School at 10 and worship at 11 each Sunday morning. We are located about two miles off Alabama Highway 22 at 2950 Coosa County Road 459 in the Richville community. There are several other churches in our area that would welcome visitors at any time.
Regardless of how you celebrate Christmas and the holidays, I encourage you to include the Bible story found in Luke 2:1-20 in your celebration. Our family reads this passage on Christmas morning to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus is indeed the reason for the season!
Continuing with Bible verses connected to Christmas, here is one that is not often heard. Micah 5:2 reads, “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.”
Micah is prophesying about God’s judgment against Israel, but he also includes hope in the form of a promise of a Messiah that will come from humble beginnings. God had the entire world to choose from, but He used a town that was insignificant and virtually unknown except to the locals.
However, when the wise men from the East come to Jerusalem seeking Jesus, King Herod’s scribes quote this passage as evidence that the ruler they seek is to be born in Bethlehem. If you read the entire chapter, you see where the coming ruler is pictured as a shepherd just as David, his ancestor, was.
This is just another example of how God uses the ordinary person to accomplish His purpose. I encourage you to read in the Old Testament the prophesies that are references to Jesus coming. Besides this passage in Micah, Isaiah has several references, as well, about the promised ruler, King and Messiah.
Please be in prayer for all those that are sick in our community. But also, think about giving someone a call just to say hello; it will make a difference in their day. Many times, when we go out to spread blessings to others, it’s us that gets the blessing.
Organizations in the area, as well as churches, I need your events! If your family has some news or an event to share, please contact me. I would prefer text 334-414-7147 or emails wardgrand6@gmail.com, but phone calls will be fine, too. If you don’t get me when you call, be sure to leave a message.
