Are you ready for Christmas? About a week and a half until the day, and I still do not have a tree up. It will be the first time in 20 years for me to have a tree up, and I am doing it for a precious 4 year old who keeps asking where my tree is.
This has not been a happy season for me in the past with child visitation meaning my son was with his father, and after 13 years I found out he never gave my son a Christmas morning, just didn’t want me to have him on Christmas. Then I lost my father a few days after Christmas, and my mother passed on Christmas morning. But it’s time for a fresh start with a precious little miracle boy, so a tree and some decorations are going up.
But first we celebrate my husband’s birthday today, Friday the 13th. He already received his gift from me since I was having a hard time hiding the box. He had told me a WWII story of a soldier finding a bar/pub in Belgium, but all the glasses and mugs were broken so he used his helmet to fill with beer from the tap to take back to the hospital as some comfort for his wounded buddies.
On his second return trip he was stopped by a doctor or superior officer and told not to give them the “dirty” beer, and the solder was ordered to put his helmet back on, so he did, dumping his beer on his head in the process. This became a heroic story in Belgium, and they designed a beer known as Airborne beer and a ceramic mug that resembled a helmet. I did the research and purchased a 6-pack and a mug for his birthday, and he loves it.
Coosa County Live Open Mic Night on the second Friday of each month is tonight, December 13. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Rebel Homesteaders of Coosa and Elmore counties is having a Christmas Shop. There will be several tables of people selling homemade goods such as goat soap, vanilla, woodwork products, and sourdough bread, offering an opportunity to shop locally for Christmas gifts.
It will be held at the new event venue Grand Fava Farm at 1077 County Road 4, December 15 starting at 2 p.m. If you would like to participate in the sale, please contact me for more details.
I am sure there are various Christmas programs at local churches; I have not been informed of any, but ask your neighbors or call the churches and see what special events they are holding and get out and celebrate the season.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
