Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
This Saturday is the date! Come bring your best chili recipe for bragging rights and $100 to the Richville Neighborhood Watch Chili Cook-Off.
Entry fee is $20. Your cooked chili must be at the fire department by noon, along with a list of ingredients (just the items, not your recipe). Please don’t put a name on the list. We will number the entries so people can vote on best tasting.
Tickets to sample all the chilis and vote for your favorite is $1 per vote. Everyone is encouraged to come out. The winner will be determined by popular vote and announced at 2 p.m.
Also, there will be a bake sale with a variety of baked goods. Proceeds from the bake sale will be used to sponsor a family for Christmas. If you wish to enter or donate baked goods, please contact either Pinky Reichert at 205-616-3581 or Ron Garrison at 256-935-0693.
Then at 6:30, come out for the Richville Volunteer Fire Department Bingo. We always have a good time of fellowship and fun. They will sell concessions, also.
Providence Baptist Church will have its Christmas program on Sunday, December 15, at 6 p.m. Finger foods and desserts will be in the fellowship hall following the program. All are invited.
It has really felt like winter this past week. Hope everyone remembered to bring their plants in and protect exposed pipes. Also, for those that have pets outside, please provide shelter for them from the cold.
This is the first column in December, so I thought I would share some of the verses connected to Christmas. Christmas is a time when we celebrate Jesus’ birth. There are many verses in the Old Testament that foretell His birth and life.
My first verse is found in Isaiah 7:14, which reads, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Isaiah is foretelling that the promised Messiah will be born of Mary without the involvement of a human father. This verse is in a passage concerning King Ahaz and the threat of an invasion from Israel and Syria. Isaiah, speaking for the Lord, tells him it will not happen and commands Ahaz to ask for a sign.
When Ahaz refuses, this verse is God’s answer. If you read the Bible, this verse will be familiar as it is quoted in Matthew 1:23 telling Joseph that Mary is the virgin fulfilling this verse. There have been arguments for centuries surrounding this miracle.
For Christians, we believe Matthew and Isaiah to be God’s revelation that Mary conceived her baby by the Holy Spirit and not by any man. Those hearing Isaiah’s words didn’t realize that this son would not be born for centuries. We, today, know that the Old Testament contains many prophecies that were not fulfilled until years later. There are some that have not been fulfilled yet.
Please be in prayer for all those that are sick in our community. But also, think about giving someone a call just to say hello; it will make a difference in their day. Many times, when we go out to spread blessings to others, it’s us that gets the blessing.
