The Town of Rockford is continuing to look to make improvements, moving forward with a sidewalk repair project and getting quotes for some improvements to the town park.
During the Town Council meeting last Tuesday evening, Mayor Scott White reported that the town had received two quotes for repairing the town sidewalk in front of the Coosa County Courthouse.
The matter has been discussed at previous council meetings, but was tabled while the town waited to see what the County Commission was going to do regarding other courthouse projects and work in the vicinity. However, last week White explained that when he last spoke with County Administrator Amy Gilliland, those things were still “up in the air.”
As such, White and council members discussed moving forward with the sidewalk repair. White stated that if there is any damage to the sidewalk from any county projects that come up later, then the county would handle any needed repairs.
Regarding the quotes, the town received one quote for $21,720 and one for $6,800 for the sidewalk repair, with the lowest quote being from Coosa Enterprises.
After brief discussion, with Councilmember Robert Smith absent from the meeting, the council unanimously approved moving forward with the sidewalk project with Coosa Enterprises. White stated that the project should be able to begin within about two weeks after town attorney Tom Young prepares the necessary paperwork.
Regarding other improvements, White stated that the town is holding more events in the park near the Board of Education building. With that in mind, he said that he wanted the town to look into putting in more lights and electrical outlets, as well as run some water spickets.
During discussion, White said that the lighting would only be utilized during events since the park regularly is closed at dark.
White also mentioned that the town has received a grant to install new exercise equipment at the park for youth and adults, adding that this project would coincide with that.
He said that he estimates the electrical and plumbing work in the park will likely cost approximately $5,000. He said that, if approved, if it exceeds $5,000 he would come back before the council.
However, during discussion Councilmember Nieshia Whetstone said that she thought it would be best to get quotes first. The council unanimously approved getting quotes for the work to be performed, and it will then come back before the council for a vote once quotes are received.
In other business, White also reviewed information on the town’s Christmas event and parade to be held Saturday, December 14, with the vendors and day event being held downtown from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the parade starting at 6 p.m.
Also during the meeting, the council recognized five government students in attendance from Central High School Coosa County.
In other business, White stated that the council needed to go into executive session for approximately 20-30 minutes to discuss a property that is available to the town. The council unanimously approved going into executive session, and attorney Young explained to the government students what an executive session is and how it works.
The council went back into regular session after 18 minutes, with no action taken regarding the property matter, and the meeting was adjourned.
The next regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Rockford Town Council will be held at 6 p.m. December 17.
