Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
The dictionary says a community is a unified body of individuals, such as people with common interests living in a particular area. And the dictionary says a neighbor is one living or located near another. But does your neighbor feel like your community? I mean do you feel or have any common interest with the person living next door to you?
Sometimes that is yes, and other times it is just a straight up no. And sometimes you know which way it will go before they even move in. You don’t clean the carpets of a house you haven’t closed on and have the deed in hand and the seller hasn’t moved out of.
I try to be a good neighbor. I accept my neighbors for who they are, and I try to mind my own business even though sometimes that gets challenging; fortunately that one is tied up for a bit. If they want to chat or socialize I will; if not, that is fine, too. If they need help, I will offer, and if they have a dispute with me, I will work to resolve it.
But I will admit I am not a perfect neighbor to some; I am a fan of permaculture which is wild and unmanicured. We keep the tractor and trailers in the front yard often. Renovations are long, and porches are cluttered. I don’t rake leaves because there is so much in nature that depends on those leaves.
I like my house to be painted in multiple colors, like historical Victorians were. So, for some, I am a poor neighbor. Which makes me very happy I live in the Equality and Nixburg area, free of HOAs, rules and regulations demanding I live to the standards of a few. They are free to do with their property as they wish, and I am free to do with my property as I wish.
Equality Neighborhood Watch for November and December are being combined to one meeting on December 5 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please join us for a community gathering with food, safety tips, sheriff’s updates, and socializing with our neighbors.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s First Saturday fundraiser is December 7. Come at 8 a.m. for breakfast, bake sale and rummage sale, and return at 11 a.m. for lunch plates. This event is not just a great way to support our volunteer fire department, but also a great opportunity to stay connected with the community with food and fellowship.
Coosa County Live’s Open Mic Night is the second Friday in December, which will be December 13. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Rebel Homesteaders of Coosa and Elmore counties is having a Christmas Shop. There will be several tables of people selling homemade goods such as goat soap, vanilla and sourdough bread, offering an opportunity to shop locally for Christmas gifts. It will be held at the new event venue, Grand Fava Farm, at 1077 County Road 4, December 15 starting at 2 p.m. If you would like to participate in selling, please contact me for more details and to sign up.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
