Work will be done to a compressor station in Coosa County as part of Williams’ expansion project for the Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Company LLC, or Transco.
Transco is a natural gas transmission pipeline owned and operated by Williams to transport natural gas from production areas to customers, such as utility companies and power plants, located throughout the Northeastern and Southeastern United States. The Transco pipeline is an approximately 10,000-mile gas transportation system that extends from south Texas to New York City.
As previously reported, Williams had announced the development of an expansion project called the Southeast Supply Enhancement Project, which includes some work to be done in Coosa County. Williams recently provided additional information about the project and its status.
The project is designed to ultimately add approximately 1.6 million dekatherms per day of affordable natural gas to Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama to meet the growing residential, commercial and industrial demand across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States, according to Williams. It is targeted to be in service by the fourth quarter of 2027.
Williams explains that amount of gas is equivalent to what is needed to supply approximately 9.8 million homes with natural gas for hot water, heat and cooking.
The project will include pipeline looping adjacent to the existing Transco corridor and modifications to eight facilities. The Southeast Supply Enhancement Project is being regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, under an application filing process to ensure thorough consultation and cooperation with other state, local and federal regulatory agencies, as well as community stakeholders.
The project includes work to be done in five states in the southeast. The only work to be done in Alabama will take place in Coosa County, where Williams’ scope of work includes a compressor station reversal and modifications at Station 105 in the county, located along Alabama Highway 22, specifically to modify the piping for bi-directional compression.
Other work to be done for the project includes a total of 26.4 miles of pipeline looping adjacent to the existing Transco corridor and additional compressor units located in Virginia at Station 165; a total of 28.4 miles of pipeline looping and additional compressor units at multiple counties in North Carolina at stations 145, 150 and 155; a compressor station reversal at Station 135 in South Carolina; and a compressor station reversal and regulator at Station 120 and compressor station reversal at Station 125, both in Georgia.
Williams is proposing to collocate the proposed project within or adjacent to the existing Transco Mainline System “to the extent practicable” in order to help reduce the overall operational footprint of the project and minimize new disturbances.
During the timeline for this project, Williams held its initial public outreach at the end of 2023 and pre-filed with FERC earlier this year. This fall Williams filed its FERC 7(c) application, and pending approval, the company has a target construction start for the fall of 2026.
Williams explained that before it can expand or modify its facilities, the company first had to apply for, and obtain, a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from FERC. It filed an application for the proposed project with FERC on October 29, referenced as FERC docket number CP25-10-000.
During its review of the application, FERC assesses any potential impacts to private property, the environment and communities. Information about the environmental review process and the Southeast Supply Enhancement Project may be accessed on the FERC website at www.ferc.gov, by email to customer@ferc.gov, or by calling the FERC Office of External Affairs at 866-208-3372. The docket number, CP25-10-000, should be included on any correspondence to FERC.
