Special to the News
The Coosa County school system is very thankful to the Coosa County Farmers Federation Women’s Committee and its president, Donna Brown, for sponsoring an essay contest for students as part of the Farm-City Week celebration.
Pictured is Coosa County Farmers Federation Women’s Committee president Donna Brown, vice president Beverly Burks, Central High School ninth and eleventh grade English teacher Jacob Moon, and the essay contest winners.
Thank you, also, to the Coosa County Schools science coach Shelley Wood who coordinated the contest between the Coosa County Farmers Federation and Central’s English teachers. This year’s theme was “Our Community Counts on Farmers.”
Moon said, “I was very pleased with how our students performed; the students who placed well and even those who did not showed exceptional skill in thoughtful writing which displayed the capabilities of our students, as well as their understanding of why farming is so important to our local community.”
Congratulations to the essay winners. First place in the seventh-ninth grade division went to Mallorie Feltman, second place went to Wyatt Kimbrell, and third place went to Alizabeth Cowart.
In the tenth through twelfth grade division, first place went to Jesse Gray (not pictured), second place went to Lamiya Harrison (not pictured), and third place went to Elizabeth Moore.
First place winners received $75 each, second place winners received $50 each, and third place winners received $25 each. Moon also received a $150 reward for his guidance in helping the students craft their essays and offering suggestions for revisions.
The essays of first-place winners Mallorie Feltman and Jesse Gray were submitted to the State Committee for competition at the state level. We wish Mallorie and Jesse the best of luck at the state level.
