Union Square News
Ruby Johnson
Many great things happen in the month of October; however, it’s always a bittersweet month for me.
It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Be aware of your health. Go for your yearly checkup.
Happy birthday to a very special person who made October a sweet month when she was born on October 20. She took all the bitterness out! That person is Mrs. Chlora (C.K.) May, one of my most favorite former school teachers of all time.
She turned 94 last Sunday, October 20, and she sounds the same as she did at the age of 24. I called her and said to her, “I hope you haven’t forgotten who I am.” (The reason being I had not seen nor heard from her for a long time.) She answered me in a hurry and said, “Ruby, I couldn’t forget you if I wanted to.” Oh, how that blessed me! Word are powerful and how they make you feel.
Mrs. C.K. May has always had a special way with words to allow you to feel them in a real, positive, powerful way. I love her for that. She gives you much confidence in believing and knowing who you are. That’s what a great teacher is.
She still reads “The Coosa County News” and encouraged me to continue writing. That inspired me, for I was in a dark place losing so many loved ones and Butch being under the weather. I wanted to stop writing for a moment. Mrs. May pulled me up from the valley.
You will never know who will do the pulling until you find that great teacher. I pray that Mrs. May will enjoy many more great years to come.
Someone said to me, “I didn’t know you had a sister (Peggy) 91 years old. I was thinking she was your mother.” I asked them, “Do you know how old I am?” They were surprised after I told them! I am grateful for loved ones that I know who reached the age of 90-plus and still serving the Lord greatly.
Happy birthday to Vickie Scott, Betty Smith, Lydia Waters, Christa Jennings, Pastor Chris Hill, Pastor Stanford Benson, my son Kareem Johnson, nephew Patrick Johnson Sr., niece Sylvia Hill Anderson, and to all the October-born who attend Rockford Church of God (too many to name).
In loving memories of dear loved ones born in October: Pastor Michel White, Bernice Hoyett Wood and Mother Pauline Norris-Thomas.
The senior citizens of Coosa County and others enjoyed a fun day with games, food, etc. at their annual Octoberfest on October 17, hosted by the J.D. Thompson Alumni in Cottage Grove. The oldest seniors attending were Mrs. Lellian Leonard and Mrs. Chlora May, who was surprised with a big birthday cake provided by her daughter Myrna to honor her mother’s 94 years being here on earth on October 20.
Mr. Levi Leonard was the oldest senior male present, a faithful soul of the Coosa County community and a cool dude at 90 years-plus.
Special guests were the Goodwater Silver Steppers providing music and easy exercise dance moves that everyone enjoyed. There were also tours of the historic building; very informative for many who toured. It was a well spent day for everyone.
We are sorry of the death of Ms. Emogene Austin. Our prayers and condolences go to the family.
Congratulations to Christa Jennings on her great achievement. More on her next week.
