Equality & NIxburg News

Funny things happen when it comes to money. Some folks do very ugly things, even to family, when they desire money that is not quite theirs.
Recently an aging family member was taken advantage of by a family member over money. Inheritance couldn’t wait, so they lied and manipulated to access the account and took what they felt they had a right to. It was not their money, no matter how much they wanted it. Until a will is read, the money belongs to the person who earned it, saved it, invested it, gained it.
And from personal experience, all those with something to leave their loved ones, write a will detailing every penny. Otherwise, death and money does funny things to people.
I had a family member who thought they wrote an iron clad irrevocable trust that would take care of their spouse and two adult children after their death, leaving the principal to the grandchildren. One of the children hired an attorney to break the trust to get the principal, and even though the judge pointed out they would have much more with the payments over their lifetime than the principal, if broken all they could see was getting that principal amount in their hands and leave their children nothing.
This is not to say don’t write one out, but write one with a contingency for those that act the ugliest. And you may think you know who they are before you pass, but you don’t. Many times, the ugliest after your passing are the sweetest while you are alive. I have also made it known verbally to my children what my wishes are. They all know; there will be no surprises.
