In My Humble Opinion
Jodi McDade
I’m watching the news this morning (Tuesday) as I ponder what I am going to write about today. There are so many different topics that are extremely important so I’ll just try to hit the high spots.
At the moment the thing that scares me to death is the report that Iran is planning a ballistic missile attack on Israel. This could escalate into an extremely dangerous situation so I am praying it will not happen.
Israel is protecting itself from the terrorist organizations that are supported out of Iran, and they have every right to do that, but they have not attacked Iran directly. Iran had not been able to finance their military until President Biden released the money being withheld from them by former President Trump.
The strike by the Longshoreman’s Union is going to affect us in our ability to purchase all types of goods. I hope all of you stocked up on necessities at the grocery store just in case. Maybe this will be resolved by the time this edition of the paper comes out.
If not, things will have gotten much worse. The unions are asking for a 77% pay raise and are not accepting the 50% raise that has been offered. This is where I have a problem with unions. When companies are forced into these extreme pay increases it is passed on down the line to us on everything we buy. But the rest of us who are not represented by a union will never see pay raises of that proportion!
There is no way to avoid the horrible situation much of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina find themselves in after the destruction from Hurricane Helene. Many of these areas are experiencing things they had no idea could happen. Those of us along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Ocean are accustomed to hurricanes and the damages that come from them. We know how to prepare, when to evacuate and when to just hunker down.
The damages in these areas are mostly related to high water caused by the massive storm surge that was predicted and the amount of rain that came inland. Our prayers definitely need to be with these people and, if possible, we need to help send supplies to them – or donate to Samaritans Purse (or other organizations) who will go in to provide them with food, water and support.
Alabama National Guard and power company crews have been deployed to some of the damaged areas. Other states have also sent personnel to help with the rescue, recovery and clean up. From the pictures I’ve seen and the posts on social media it looks like it will be a long road for many of these towns and communities to rebuild. And so many of them relied on tourism for their income, and many of us have spent time in those areas. It will never be quite the same.
Overall, the main concern with both the Israeli situation and Hurricane Helene is the loss of life. More than 100 have been reported dead from the storm with some still missing. So many on both sides in the Middle East have been killed. Many of these were civilians who were being used as shields by Hamas and Hezbollah.
All of this started last October 7 when an attack was made at a civilian music festival in Israel. At least Israel attempts to target only those organizations, terrorists and governments that are responsible with as little civilian casualties as possible.
The other topic of today (Tuesday) as I write this is the Vice-Presidential Debate that will occur tonight. I hope many of you watched to hear how much difference there is between the two candidates. Since Kamala Harris has still not held a press conference and taken questions from reporters we still don’t really know what her policies are. Maybe Tim Walz will let some slip out. I’ve been thinking he might have some type of unexpected illness that would prevent him from being able to participate at the last minute. We’ll see.
It’s fairly quiet here in Coosa County with the passing of the new budgets being the main thing going on. October 1 started the new fiscal year for governmental agencies, and their plans for the next year had to be passed by September 30. I’ve been pleasantly surprised lately to hear the Coosa County Board of Education being in the black for a change and the Town of Rockford also having money in the bank. Hopefully the County Commission has found some ways to bring more revenue into the county itself.
Have a good week; I hope many of these issues have been resolved by the time you are reading this. Please pray for our country, our military, our first responders, and our law enforcement.
