Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Life seems so much like a yo-yo these days. My job seems to have a solution; working on a subcontract I can stay remote and continue working from home.
I have yet to get all the details, but at least it is a ray of hope for my future financial security. Especially considering our current economic situation with nature and labor threatening to make it worse with hurricanes destroying whole regions and ports going on strike, leaving imports unloaded, thus not being delivered to warehouses and stores. The full impact won’t be felt for months, but some are stocking up now before shortages and price increases.
But with the house renovations taking longer than I had hoped I also have lost hope in putting in a fall garden. I just don’t have the time. It was fiscal year end at work, which kept me long hours. Then trying to reuse as much of the original trim but having to strip paint, varnish and stain off of 100-year-old, hand-cut millwork is painstakingly time consuming.
Hopefully the wood stove will be installed this next week, but no cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, or collards will be planted this year.
Events and activities in the area include:
The Equality Volunteer Fire Department (EVDF) is still looking for more volunteers to support their efforts in keeping us all safe. They need as much involvement as they can get so again, please come and support your community by volunteering your time at a great organization. Also, you are free to join the training on the first and third Mondays at 6:30 p.m. even if just to watch and find out more about what EVFD has going on.
The first Saturday fundraiser is Saturday, October 5. Come at 8 a.m. for breakfast, bake sale, and rummage sale, and return at 11 for lunch plates, which in addition to the usual hot dog and hamburger plates, a fish sandwich will also be offered while supplies last. This event is not just a great way to support our volunteer fire department, but also a great opportunity to stay connected with the community with food and fellowship.
Equality Neighborhood Watch is the fourth Thursday, October 24. Last month we were to enjoy a fabulous catfish dinner along with other goodies; however, with the threat of Hurricane Helene as it passed through the state, we took the cautionary route and canceled the meeting. Join us this month to learn more about the community and ways to stay alert and safe.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department sponsored Bingo is on the last Saturday of each month, this month being held on October 26 at 4 p.m. The cards are $1 each, and all proceeds go to support our volunteer fire department, so come out for a fun evening while helping the community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
