Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
More work for me on this old homestead. Not yet finished on the drywall as I really hate mud and sanding, so I keep getting distracted with stripping paint off the door trim. Spending more time at home has been a big help in making renovation projects move forward.
It has also helped in dealing with predatory animals. The neighbor’s pitbull seems to be handled recently, but I have trapped a raccoon and an opossum in recent days. We know the raccoon had gotten hold of a neighbor’s young guineas, so we set the trap. We still believe there is another, but it is avoiding the trap so far, but will keep trying until it is dealt with. Especially when a hen who I thought was a victim showed up with 14 chicks. We need to keep them safe.
Events and activities in the area include:
The Equality Volunteer Fire Department (EVDF) is still looking for more volunteers to support their efforts in keeping us all safe. They need as much involvement as they can get, so again, please come and support your community by volunteering your time at a great organization. Also, you are free to join the training on first and third Mondays at 6:30 p.m., even if just to watch and find out more about what EVFD has going on.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s Labor Day Boston butt and rib sale fundraiser is here. Boston butts: $35. Rack of ribs: $30. Delivery is Friday, August 30, 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, August 31, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Equality Fire Department Fire Hall and Lodge next to Quality Food Mart on Highway 9. To place an order contact Jackie Dean, 256-786-1169, or Jean Moe Prince, 256-537-1884, or email EqualityVFD@outlook.com. If you email, make sure you get a reply to ensure your order was received.
Coosa County Live has a live performance on the fourth Friday of the month, August 23, tonight. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department sponsored Bingo is on the last Saturday of each month, this month being held on August 31, at 4 p.m. The cards are $1 each, and all proceeds go to support our volunteer fire department, so come out for a fun evening while helping the community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
