The U.S. presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is the talk of the nation. And Alabama is no different. There is no question that voters in our state will overwhelmingly vote for Donald Trump as they did in 2016 and 2020.
Former President Donald Trump won by more than 60% by election cycles. If the former president is successful in gaining another term in the White House, Alabama will benefit in a number of ways. Probably the biggest win for Alabama will be the possibility that the U.S. Space Command will return to Huntsville.
There was a very competitive process to determine which state would land the headquarters. All objective criteria all pointed to Huntsville based on its infrastructure, work force, education, and existing military support system already located in Madison County. With the U.S. Army Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center centered in Huntsville, Space Command would be a natural fit for the same community.
Back in 2021, after years of studies by the Air Force, then President Trump designated Alabama as the permanent home for the command headquarters. However, with the election of Joe Biden as president, the decision was made to make Colorado Springs, Colorado, the permanent home for the space command. For now, Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers has blocked defense funds from being used to keep the command in Colorado.
In the meantime, the presidential election will go a long way towards what happens with the future of this important branch of the armed forces. Hopefully, when it is all said and done, Alabama’s rocket city will finally be the indefinite site for the U.S. Space Command.
