Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Now that I have recovered from my fall, I have been back to work on my home renovations. I really wish I had the funds to hire folks because I have had quite a few folks that need work to make ends meet.
Praying something turns around for all of us, but the stock market downturn at the beginning of the week may be an indication that the turnaround won’t be anytime soon. But I have hope, because I would love the help and would love to pay them so they are blessed with income, as well. For now, it will have to be piecemeal job by job, person by person, until I can afford to just hire a whole group and finish things.
Even Jenny’s General has had to clearance inventory and cut hours and will not be restocking shelves for now. The power bill is not affordable, and sales are at an all-time low. There are many products 50% off. The store’s official new hours are Thursday and Friday 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Bulk dried herb orders can be made by phone call, email, Facebook Messenger, or text for pick up, as these items take a bit of time to measure, weigh and package if you are pressed for time.
Events and activities in the area include:
From R. Wade Turner, Equality Volunteer fire chief, “Equality Volunteer Fire Department (EVDF) is currently looking for candidates for the position of volunteer firefighter/EMS personnel, and/or any combination of that. Experience preferred but not required. Come out and get involved. Please support your community; we would love to have you. There is a job for everybody from frontline fire personnel to EMS to behind-the-scenes support personnel, including support personnel for the first Saturday fundraiser events. We need as much involvement as we can get, so again, please come and support your community by volunteering your time at a great organization.”
Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s Labor Day Boston butt and rib sale fundraiser is here. Boston butts: $35. Rack of ribs: $30. Delivery is Friday, August 30, from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, August 31, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Equality Fire Department Fire Hall and Lodge next to Quality Food Mart on Highway 9. To place an order contact Jackie Dean at 256-786-1169 or Jean Moe Prince at 256-537-1884 or email EqualityVFD@outlook.com. If you email, make sure you get a reply to ensure your order was received.
Coosa County Live has Open Mic night the second Friday of the month, August 9, tonight. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Equality Neighborhood Watch meetings are held the fourth Thursday of every month. Come join us August 22 for information on what is happening around the area from the sheriff’s report to first responder report and all the community announcements with food and fellowship included.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department sponsored Bingo is on the last Saturday of each month, this month being held on August 31, at 4 p.m. The cards are $1 each, and all proceeds go to support our volunteer fire department, so come out for a fun evening while helping the community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
