Rose Benton
Memorial service for Mrs. Rose Benton, 78, of Kellyton, will be Friday, August 9, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Mr. Sammy Teel will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Radney Funeral Home.
Rose Benton, a beacon of love and wisdom, passed away surrounded by the warmth of her family, leaving behind a legacy of education, music, and unwavering spirit. She was a cherished member of her community and an inspiration to all who knew her.
Born into the loving arms of Denver Thaxton Hayes and Gladys Hodge Hayes, Rose developed a passion for music and learning that would define her life’s work. Her educational journey culminated in a bachelor’s degree in music from Judson College and a bachelor’s degree in education from Auburn University at Montgomery. These accomplishments set the stage for a remarkable career that would touch the lives of countless students.
Rose dedicated over 30 years to educating young minds in the Coosa County and Alexander City school systems. Her commitment to education was not just a profession, but a calling, as she nurtured the potential of every child who entered her classroom. Beyond the school walls, she was actively involved in various educational associations, advocating for the importance of lifelong learning and the arts.
Her love for her family shone brightly, especially in her role as a mother and grandmother. Rose is survived by her loving son, Brent Hayes Benton, and his wife, Leigh Ellen, of Alexander City. Her grandchildren, Kennedy Elizabeth Benton and Denver Curtis Benton, were the apples of her eye, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Her adoration for her grandchildren was matched only by her love of the outdoors, where she found peace and rejuvenation.
Rose’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love and wisdom. Her spirited nature was contagious, and she left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was preceded in death by her father, Denver Thaxton Hayes; her mother, Gladys Hodge Hayes; and her beloved husband, James Curtis Benton. The love they shared continues to resonate in the memories of those who were part of Rose’s journey.
The world has lost a truly loving and spirited soul, a wise guide who led by example and with grace. Rose Benton’s melody will continue to resonate in the hearts of her loved ones and the community she so faithfully served. Her legacy is one of joy, learning, and the boundless love she gave to her family and students. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will remain a guiding light for generations to come.

Phillip Huel Goodwin
Phillip “Goober” Goodwin; a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend; passed away surrounded by his loving family. Born with a heart full of laughter and a mind ripe with wit, Phillip made the world a brighter place for everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, family, and the simple joys that make life worth living.
Graduating from Hackneyville High School’s class of 1981, Phillip’s strong work ethic was evident early on. He dedicated many years to the pulpwood industry straight out of high school until 1999. Following this, he was employed at Tag Grinding where he continued to showcase his exceptional skill in operating heavy equipment until his well-deserved retirement in 2017.
Phillip’s adventurous spirit and intelligent approach to life were complemented by his innate ability to find humor in everyday situations. He was an avid fisherman, a pastime that not only spoke to his love for adventure, but also provided cherished moments with family and friends. His love for fishing was only surpassed by the joy he found in spending time with his beloved family.
Phillip is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Ann Goodwin of Goodwater; his children, Phillip Houston Goodwin (Danielle), Maxine B. Baker (Charles), and Luke C. Bridges III (Grace); and his adored grandchildren, Adeline and Jack Goodwin, Caitlin Yates, Kelsey, David and James Smith, Anna, Allison, and Luke Parker Bridges. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Brayden Levi Yates, Channel Yates, Bryson Ragland, Oaklynn Ragland, Shelby Smith, and Bryce McKinney, who brought immense joy to his later years.
He leaves behind his brother, Tommy Goodwin of Alexander City; his nephew, Jeremy Goodwin; his aunt, Helen McCleod; his nephew, Brandon Bryan; and his niece, Brandi Laine Cotney (Daniel) of New Site, as well as numerous other family members who will miss him dearly.
Phillip was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Huel Goodwin; his mother, Robbie Jean Goodwin; his niece, Jamie Olivia Goodwin; his sister-in-law, Donna Goodwin; and his sister, Debra Jean Keel.
Phillip’s life was a beautiful patchwork of the moments he shared with the people he loved. He was the pillar of his family, a source of endless stories and laughter, and a man who approached every challenge with a mixture of intelligence and humor. His adventurous soul will be remembered fondly by all who had the honor of accompanying him on the journey of life.
As we bid farewell to Phillip, we celebrate the indelible mark he left on our hearts. His memory will continue to inspire us to embrace life’s adventures, cherish our loved ones, and find joy in the simple things. Phillip “Goober” Goodwin’s legacy will live on through the laughter of his family, the stories they share, and the fish that swim a little easier now in the waters he loved so much.

Howard Lamar Grier
Funeral service for Mr. Howard Lamar Grier, 87, of Rockford, was Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at the Rockford Baptist Church. Bro. David Grier and Dr. Jeffrey Fuller officiated. The family will have a private committal service at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery at a later time.
Mr. Grier, a faith-filled and gentle soul known for his infectious humor, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on May 9, 1937, in Elmore County to Albourn Webster Grier and Susie Lee Holman Grier. A devout Christian, Mr. Grier dedicated many years of service as a deacon, touching lives with his kindness and unwavering faith. His commitment to the Rockford Baptist Church community was profound and heartfelt.
A man of many joys, Mr. Grier’s laughter was a familiar and comforting sound to all who knew him. His love for playing cards, engaging in games, and sharing stories was only matched by his passion for fishing – a pastime where he found peace and solace.
Mr. Grier’s talents extended beyond leisure; he was a skilled handyman whose ability to build and fix anything was nothing short of remarkable. His daily presence at the Main Street Cafe in Clanton will be deeply missed, as will the light of his fun spirit. Mr. Grier’s legacy of love, laughter, and service will forever be cherished.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Grier of Rockford; daughter, Debra (Randy) Roddenberry of Conyers, Ga.; son, David (Daphne) Grier of Rockford; grandchildren, Abigail (Ryan) Grantham of Graceville, Fla., and Faith Grier of Rockford.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Grady Grier, Melvin Grier, Mervin Grier, Fannie Grier, Paul Grier, Susie Grier, and Thomas Grier.

Alicia Renee Taunton, affectionately known as Renee to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024, in Alexander City, after a life rich with laughter, love, and cherished memories. Born on March 23, 1966, in Montgomery, Renee’s infectious smile and warm heart brightened the lives of those around her for 58 wonderful years.
Renee’s life was marked by her dedication to her family, who were the center of her world. She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to her children, Andrew Taylor, Zach (Leah) Taylor, and Ashleigh (Michael) Murphy; her adored grandchild, Kimber Taylor; and her caring brothers, Greg (Jeanne) Taunton and Gary Taunton; and sisters-in-law, Judy Taunton and Kathy Parton. Her extended family of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and her special friend, Jeannie Hodnett, will also hold her memory dear. The Taunton family has lost a cherished sister and aunt, as Renee was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Otis and Alice Taunton; brother, Keith Taunton; and her nephew, Justin Taunton.
Renee’s professional life was a reflection of her nurturing spirit, as she spent 17 years at Mother Goose daycare, where her love for children shone brightly as she cared for the little ones in the baby room. Her kindness and gentle touch left a lasting impression on countless families over the years.
Beyond her work, Renee was a woman of many passions. She shared an unbreakable bond with her parents and was known as the princess to her three brothers, who spoiled and protected her with unwavering affection. Renee’s joy was found in the simple pleasures of life – whether it was spending time on the serene waters of Lake Martin, losing herself in a good book, meticulously assembling puzzles, or engaging in a playful game of Phase 10 with friends and family.
A collector of lighthouses, Renee’s fascination with these beacons of light mirrored her own role in life, guiding and uplifting those around her. Her love for dogs, especially the Beagle breed, was evident in her adoration for her fur babies, Gracie and Ellie. Renee’s sense of humor was a source of delight; she was always ready with a corny joke and her signature exclamation, “shoot a monkey,” which could defuse any tense situation with a laugh.
An avid Auburn fan, Renee’s enthusiasm for her team was contagious, and her presence made game days all the more enjoyable for those who shared in her fandom. Renee’s loving, funny, and friendly nature made her a cherished companion and a true friend to many.
Renee’s memory will be treasured and kept alive through the stories and laughter she shared with her loved ones. Her influence will continue to be felt in the lives of those she touched with her generous spirit and unwavering kindness. As we bid farewell to Alicia Renee Taunton, we celebrate a life lived with joy, a heart given to love, and a spirit that will forever resonate with those who had the privilege of knowing her.

William “Billy” Edward Woodfin

Funeral services for Billy Woodfin, 84, of Rockford, will be Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Radney-Smith Chapel with Bro. Jeff Hardy officiating. A visitation will be held Saturday, August 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Radney-Smith Funeral Home, 320 North Elm Avenue, Sylacauga, 35150.
Billy Woodfin died Sunday morning, August 4, 2024, at his residence. Billy was an avid deer hunter and a believer in Jesus Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Margie Woodfin; and brothers, Terry Woodfin and Timmy Woodfin.
He is survived by his wife, Geane Woodfin; son, Lantz Woodfin; daughters, Deedra Mullennix (Clark), Tina Pope (Duane), Desiree Bailey (Michael); seven grandsons and four granddaughters; twelve great-grandchildren and one on the way; and one sister, Theresa Hughes.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Burial will follow at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery, 14553 Coosa County Road 29, Weogufka, 35183, across the road from the Coosa Wildlife Management Area Checking Station.
