The Buzz
Buzzy the Buzzard
Have you ever had one of those situations that seemed complicated, but turned out to be a duct-tape-and-WD-40 solution?
Last week, one of our newspaper vending boxes was jammed. These boxes are old, hard to fix, and spare parts are limited. Ms. Christa called Mr. Fixit and hoped for the best.
So Mr. Fixit goes over with a pocketful of quarters and buys a newspaper; works fine. Then he notices that the $1.00 sticker had been scraped off. The mechanism was re-calibrated to $1.00 when the sticker was put on.
People were trying to make it work for $.50 and it won’t. So, out came the duct tape and a sharpie (forgot to mention that) and a little WD-40 on the works. Fixed it.
After hearing this, I had a talk with Dr. Sara that keeps the books for the paper. After she bored me to death about production runs, weekly cash flows, prorated monthly expenses, subscriber discounts, and senior discounts, she convinced me that it really does cost $1.00 for a newspaper.
This is a cost that the community should bear if it wants a community newspaper that tells the truth. There are a handful of past subscribers who have lapsed and will soon be hearing from Ms. Lydia, esq.
So please take my advice. Subscribe to the paper. Get your friends to subscribe. You’ll get a discount, especially if you are a senior. Just don’t ask Dr. Sara to explain it to you and don’t wait for Ms. Lydia to contact you. Sometimes you’ll get to read something from your loving eye in the sky.
