Special to the News
Central alumni, family and friends came out Saturday morning to Cougar Field for the second annual Central Baseball Alumni Game thanks to the organization of the game by alumni Kyle and Danielle Beasley.
Alumni as far back as 1997, Kyle Payne, participated, with alumni Tyler and Trevor Stover traveling the farthest to participate from Peterson AFB, Colorado, and Nellis AFB, Nevada.
The Blue vs. White game pitted odd years (Blue team) against even years (White team). The teams lined up on their respective baselines, just as they did in high school, to start the game off with the national anthem and a moment of silence, then the press box announced “play ball.”
The Blue team took the first game with a score of 17-8. Players and fans alike were having such a good time, they decided to make it into a double header.
The White team fared a little better in the second game, but the odd-year Blue team took the second game, as well.
Registration fees, which included a uniform shirt and hat, along with ticket and concession sales raised slightly more than $1,000 for the Cougar baseball program which will be used for equipment upgrades for the upcoming season.
Thank you to the alumni and their families for supporting this annual event. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year with the hopes of expanding the annual alumni game to include more players in a single elimination tournament format.
Special thank you, also, to alumni press box operator Christian Lee and alumni Diamond Dolls Remy and Sidney Thornton, as well as umpire Darsan Rogers who made the event possible by volunteering to work the game.
The Blue roster included Tyler Stover, 2011; Jermaine Maxwell, 2005; Quin Gilbert, 2023; JD Stephens, 2017; Brock Dunham, 2011; Blake Schmidt, 2007; Kevin Brown, 2009; Dillion Nail, 2017; Johnathan Ashley, 2016; Kyle Payne, 1997; and Cameron Taylor, 2013.
The White roster included Trevor Stover, 2016; Kyle Beasley, 2010; William Allen, 2010; Phillip Carlisle, 2008; Corey McVey, 2013; TJ Lamberth, 2018; Tevin Smith, 2016; Ryan Payne, 2020; Dawson Duncan, 2020; Chaz Nickolson, 2020; Ryan Kelley, 2007; and Ry Gilbert, 2023.
Thank you, also, to alumni who were not able to participate but bought a hat and shirt: Craig Dunham, 2009, and Jeremy Gallops, 2012.
The “Once a Cougar, Always a Cougar” spirit made for a great day at Cougar Field.
