A high-speed chase through multiple jurisdictions eventually culminated in the arrest of a Goodwater man on multiple charges, including charges in Coosa County.
On July 3, Deputy Payton received a call of a possible intoxicated driver on County Road 49 and responded to the scene. While stationary and observing traffic, he saw a Nissan Frontier traveling at a high rate of speed on County Road 49, driving recklessly and changing lanes.
In attempting to conduct a traffic stop, a high-speed pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued through many county and city jurisdictions.
During the pursuit, a Coosa County deputy was stationary and waiting in the Merkel Mountain area between Sylacauga and Childersburg. The driver hit the deputy’s vehicle and continued going.
Eventually, because of safety concerns, law enforcement officers used tactical vehicle intervention or a precision immobilization technique to stop the vehicle.
The driver exited and fled on foot, and a foot pursuit then ensued. Ultimately 36-year-old Scott William McCook Jr. of Goodwater was taken into custody.
He dropped an item during the foot pursuit, which was found laying on the ground and identified as methamphetamine. The Talladega County Sheriff’s Office collected the controlled substance, arrested McCook and took him into custody at the scene on charges in Talladega County.
Upon being released from jail on July 10, Coosa County Sheriff’s Office then picked him up from Talladega County Jail and arrested him on local charges.
In Coosa he was charged with attempting to elude law enforcement, reckless driving, exceeding a reasonable road speed, driving on the wrong side of the road, and failure to signal.
McCook’s total bond for all five charges was set at $5,800. As of press time he remained in custody at the Coosa County Jail awaiting trial.
