Today’s Day of Action postponed because of weather

While today’s Day of Action at Central High School hosted by Lake Martin Area United Way had to be postponed because of weather, there are other ways area residents can help the local school system this weekend.
Debi Stover, high school teacher and Student Government Association sponsor, reported yesterday that the United Way Day of Action scheduled for this morning had been postponed because of the possibility of inclement weather. She said that a new date for the Day of Action will be announced in the near future.
However, this weekend is still the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday as reported last week, and in addition to shopping for school supplies for their families, individuals will have the opportunity to help give back to the school system, as well.
The Coosa County Children’s Policy Council and Coosa County Extension Office are holding a school supply drive to help furnish students with needed school supplies for the upcoming year.
While shopping locally for school supplies this weekend and saving money on tax-free eligible items, school buses will be stationed at the Goodwater, Rockford and Stewartville Dollar General stores tomorrow, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those interested in helping with the school supply drive can purchase items at those stores and then drop them off in the school bus on site, making it convenient for shoppers to donate supplies.
Supplies donated prior to tomorrow can be dropped off at the Coosa County Extension Office, located at 243 Coosa County Road 75, Rockford, 35136.
Those who are unable to shop for supplies or who would prefer to make a donation toward the purchase of school supplies may do so by sending a check made payable to the Children’s Policy Council to Marty Rittmann at P.O. Box 425; Rockford, AL 35136.
For more information about Coosa’s school supply drive, contact Shannon Davis with the Extension Office at 814-431-2657.
Gov. Kay Ivey has also joined in encouraging Alabama families to stock up on school supplies during the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday this weekend.
On Monday, Ivey released the following statement, “Alabama families, it’s that time of year again! With the upcoming school year just around the corner, I encourage everyone to take full advantage of our Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday. This is an opportunity to save on essential school supplies and ensure our students are well-prepared and excited to learn.”
Items available for purchase and exempt from sales tax during the weekend include pencils, paper, binders, calculators, rulers, and even computers, as well as school uniforms, gym suits and other types of clothing.
“This is tax relief at the perfect time for parents as they prepare for a new school year,” said Alabama Department of Revenue Commissioner Vernon Barnett. “Many counties, cities and towns are participating, as well, so we encourage everyone in Alabama to take advantage of this tax-free opportunity.”
As reported last week, Coosa County and all three of its municipalities; Goodwater, Kellyton and Rockford; are joining the state in not charging sales taxes on eligible items this weekend.
