Special to the News
Coosa Upward enjoyed another great season as the youth played baseball and reinforced character development learned at home through their Bible lessons on the life of Joseph.
Joseph’s life serves as a positive example of how a person of faith behaves when things are not going their way. What a great example for our young athletes.
Losing a ball game pales in comparison to what Joseph went through, but the premise is the same. As a person of great faith, Joseph displayed grace even when things did not go his way.
At Coosa Upward we believe the character of our youth, developed through a relationship with Jesus and knowledge of His Word, far outweighs anything our kids will ever do on a ball field, but sports provide a fun opportunity to learn both athletic skills and character.
The league is hosted by the Weogufka Family Worship Center, but is supported through a partnership with multiple Coosa County churches including those who served as Game Day Host churches this season: New Providence Baptist Church, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, New Home Baptist Church, Providence Baptist Church, Peace and Goodwill, and Sardis Baptist Church.
Coosa Upward is completely staffed by unpaid volunteers and financed through community donations. Registration costs are kept at a low $50 for participants thanks to generous donations from the community including Bronze level donors: Tom and Pinky Reichart, Infinity Real Estate, Empowered to Conquer, Dennis Sanford, New Providence Baptist Church, and Central Alabama Fire Protection.
Silver level donors include: the Town of Rockford, Albert and Peggy Palmer, Tommy and Nancy Thornton, New Home Baptist Church, Alabama One, Kellyton Fire Department, and Providence Baptist Church.
Gold level donors include: Nelson Electric, Coosa County Family Dentistry, Accordia Health, Home Depot Sylacauga and the Goodwater Fire Department.
Platinum level donors include the Weogufka Family Worship Center and Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Last but not least, thanks to our coaches who are the backbone of the league working with our youth on athletic and spiritual development every week at practices: Trenton Davenport, Colt Fincher, Zy Edwards, Bonzie Brekle, Corey McVey, Andrew Hammond, Brandi Childress, Michael Howell, Brynlee Hawthorne, Kimberly Crowe, Teresa Searcy, Uncle Stacey, Katie Martin, Carson Cardwell, Ethan Cosby, Devon Ward, Travis Ward, and Jonah Schmidt.
Thank you, also, to our scoreboard operator Charles Tillman, as well as Valerie Smith who manages the concession stand, Lynn Castleberry who serves as our social media coordinator and runs registration day and the Town of Rockford for the use of its practice field. We also want to express our love for our Upward families who step up to help out whenever they see a need and help to create a positive youth sports environment that aims to uplift our youth and volunteers.
Registration for the upcoming flag football and cheer season is $50 until July 15. Practices start mid-August and games start mid-September.
