There is an upcoming event that is near and dear to my heart, and if it was not for the ongoing remodeling of my home, I would be doing it already, opening my home to fostering children in Coosa County.
My parents always held their door open to children in need, and I did, as well; however, got into a dispute over whether to take in teenage girls or toddler boys. At the time I had one of each and opted to taking in teenage girls; however, the county I lived in said they wanted to place toddler boys in my home.
I did end up with a lovely teenage girl joining our family for three years until she aged out. She was welcome to stay longer until college was over, but she was eager to start her independent adult life. Twenty years later we still stay in touch.
Please consider becoming a foster parent. Upcoming classes start on July 9, 6 p.m. at Coosa County DHR office, 141 Jackson Street in Rockford.
If you tried to go yard sale-”ing” last weekend you might have thought I was mistaken when mentioning two; however, both were postponed because of losses in families.
Kendrick Memorial Baptist will hold its benefit Yard Sale Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Highway 9 North in Nixburg. This is a fundraising event to help support the church. Rebel Homesteaders’ yard sale is tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, June 29, with a firm decision made closer to that date.
Coosa Live has Karaoke Night on the third Friday, June 21, which is tonight. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on.
Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Equality Neighborhood Watch meetings are held the fourth Thursday of every month. Come join us June 27 for information on what is happening around the area from the sheriff’s report to first responder report and all the community announcements, with food and fellowship included.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department sponsored Bingo is on the last Saturday of each month, this month being held on June 29 at 4 p.m. Cards are $1 each, and all proceeds go to support our volunteer fire department, so come out for a fun evening while helping out the community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
