U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville joined a bipartisan Senate delegation traveling to Normandy, France, to mark the eightieth anniversary of the D-Day invasion by the Allied forces during World War II.
Tuberville’s father, Charles Tuberville, was one of the brave soldiers who landed and fought on Utah beach on June 6, 1944.
On Tuesday, Tuberville delivered a floor speech commemorating the heroes who valiantly fought and emphasizing the importance of making sure younger generations are taught about the men and women who have sacrificed for our freedoms.
“I am honored to join my colleagues in honoring the brave soldiers who lost their lives on the beaches of Normandy 80 years ago,” said Sen. Tuberville. “It has always been a bucket list item for me to see the beaches where young adults, like my father, heroically fought for our freedom. May we never forget their sacrifices and honor them by making sure our children know the truth about the freedoms that make America so great.”
The delegation arrived in Normandy on Thursday, June 6, and joined American and French leaders and veterans at a ceremony at the American Cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer. The delegation met with World War II veterans and paid their respects at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. Later that day, members of the delegation joined heads of state representing Allied partners at an international ceremony at Omaha Beach in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer.
While in France, the delegation will also meet with American diplomatic and military leadership stationed in Europe.
In addition to Senator Tuberville, senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Richard Blumenthal (R-CT), John Boozman (R-AR), Katie Britt (R-AL), Ted Budd (R-NC), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Maggie Hassan (R-NH), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Joe Manchin (I-WV), Patty Murray (D-WA), Gary Peters (D-MI), Jack Reed (D-RI), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) joined the trip.
Tuberville cosponsored a resolution commemorating D-Day and expressing gratitude and appreciation to the members of the U.S. Armed Forces and Allied troops responsible for carrying out this unprecedented maneuver that proved decisive in securing victory in Europe.
