No one likes to suffer the consequences of our actions! The word “consequence” is defined
by Webster as “something produced from a cause; a result.”
When a child cheats on a test at school and is caught they must suffer the consequences: a zero or an F for that test, discipline, a parental conference or note, etc. When we break the law and are caught we can expect to pay a fine or to go to jail or to pay some other penalty.
Often we hear people speak of “reaping what you sow!” The words “reaping” and “consequences” are very much alike. We recognize in the plant world the system of sowing and reaping. If we plant corn we expect to reap corn. If we plant watermelons we expect to reap watermelons.
This is also a Biblical principle. The Bible says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:7,8).
In the Old Testament book of Esther we find Haaman hung on the very gallows which he had built for Mordecai. In the book of Daniel we find the enemies of Daniel being thrown into the den of lions which they had chosen for his destruction. We can reap what we sow NOW and throughout all eternity!
Sometimes it appears that the wicked prosper and that they do not reap the consequences of their actions. Often it even appears that the wicked are being blessed in their wickedness. But you may be assured that eventually they will reap what they have sown just as we will!
We will not only reap what we sow, but we will usually reap far more than we sow! A farmer expects to reap far more than merely the seed that he has planted. One kernel of corn may produce many ears with hundreds of kernels each. One sinful action may produce many terrible consequences not only for ourselves, but for our family, friends and others.
For example, one drinking and driving may take the lives of one or more innocent people (even members of the drunk driver’s family). Even if he is not punished, one’s conscience may never let him forget and may make him miserable the rest of his life. This is reaping the consequences of one’s actions! A few moments of sinful pleasure may bring an unwanted child into the world, expose one to a serious disease like AIDS, or break up a family, throwing an innocent mate and children into a difficult and confused world. These are the possible consequences of one’s sinful actions!
The choices that we make in life are important! Our choices usually affect not only us, but many other people. May we all learn to think before we speak or act and consider the consequences!
