Following last Tuesday’s primary runoff election, at 12 p.m. Tuesday provisional ballots were counted and added to the county’s election results, finalizing the process to make the results official.
The Canvassing Board; consisting of Judge of Probate Richard Dean, Circuit Clerk Anita Spivey and Sheriff Michael Howell; met Tuesday along with Coosa Republican Party representative Debra Lamberth, candidate Jamey Johnson, the media, and others to review the provisionals.
Two provisional ballots were cast by registered voters and deemed countable by the Board of Registrars.
Both provisional ballots cast were for Matthew Reams for circuit clerk, the only race on the local Republican Party primary runoff election ballot.
This brought the total votes to 546 or 51.46% for Johnson and 515 or 48.54% for Reams, with a difference of just 31 votes.
Following the provisional ballots being counted and the numbers reviewed, local party chairs certified the elections for the state parties, and Coosa County’s election results became official.
The general election will be held November 5, but there are no Democratic candidates running for the circuit clerk office, meaning Johnson will run unopposed on the ballot. As reported last week, he will be sworn into office in January to begin his 6-year term as circuit clerk.
