The March 28 meeting of the Board of Education primary consisted of personnel matters, with a handful of other agenda items also approved.
With all members present, the board unanimously approved acceptance of a letter of resignation from lunchroom worker Marcus Whatley, effective March 25. The board also unanimously approved Ragan Dickson as a substitute teacher/aide for the 2023-2024 school year.
Additionally, the board unanimously approved accepting a letter of intent to retire from Gail Ezekiel, bookkeeper for Central High School, effective June 1.
That action came with board members and Superintendent of Education David Stover Jr. reminiscing on Ezekiel’s more than four decades with the system and speaking highly of her. Ezekiel has worked for the Coosa County school system for an impressive 44 years.
In other personnel matters, the board unanimously approved a Contract Principal Employment Contract with Brandi Lee for a period beginning July 1, 2024, and ending on June 30, 2027.
The board also unanimously approved the purchase of two used school buses, not to exceed $15,000 each, and a contract with Jarrod Bullard for lawn care services from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025.
Additionally, the board also unanimously approved a field trip to Six Flags over Georgia for Math and Science Day on May 10. Sponsors for the trip are Jacque Mitchell and Pam Belyeu, and Title I and students funds will be used to fund it.
In other business, the board unanimously approved and adopted a resolution to name Adam Hopper as assistant superintendent to serve in the absence of Stover.
The resolution reads, in part, “Whereas the Coosa County Board of Education does not have the position of assistant or deputy superintendent, and, whereas, Adam Hopper, given his duties and position on the board, is suited for such, now, therefore, be it resolved by the Coosa County Board of Education that Adam Hopper’s title is changed to assistant superintendent, and he is authorized to act as superintendent when so designated by Superintendent David Stover or when Superintendent Stover is unable to act.”
The board also unanimously approved and adopted a resolution regarding one-time or exemplary payments. That is in reference to across-the-board payments from the COVID-19 funds, which was given as a bonus payment, to make it clear that “any one-time or exemplary payments to all employees include the superintendent of education.”
In other business, during the meeting Stover said that they will be looking to fill some vacant positions within the school system, including to fill vacancies from retirements.
It was also mentioned that this year’s high school prom will be held April 20 at Pursell Farms in Sylacauga.
Further, Stover mentioned a staff change with Lt. Bradgel Moon no longer serving as the school system’s school resource officer. He stated at the meeting that Deputy Trenton Davenport is the new SRO and that he was undergoing training at that time.
Following a special called meeting held this morning, the next regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Board of Education will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 25.
