February 7-April 10

Volunteer Connections of Central Alabama Inc., or VCCA, along with the Coosa County Extension Office and Chamber of Commerce, is sponsoring a free income tax assistance program. Certified and trained tax preparers will provide tax assistance and electronic filing of income tax forms free of charge in Rockford every Wednesday beginning February 7 and going through April 10. VCCA will have preparers stationed at Rockford Methodist Church, located at 9916 U.S. Highway 231, each week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free service is available for those whose income is $62,000 or less or for individuals who are 60 years and older with any amount of income. Walk-ins are welcome; however, appointments will take priority. To make an appointment for the Rockford location, call VCCA in Alexander City at 256-234-0347. March 30

Family Bingo Night will be held Saturday, March 30, from 5-8 p.m. at the Bibb Graves Community Center in Millerville. New prizes, gift cards, and more! Food will be available for purchase. Bring your friends and family! Come play where everyone has fun.

 

April 8

The Coosa County Extension Office will be hosting “Adding Herbs to our Gardens” on Monday, April 8, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Coosa County Extension Office, located in the old Central High School next to Joe N. Belyeu Gymnasium; 243 County Road 75; Rockford. There is no registration fee for this event. Pre-register at 256-377-4713 by April 5.

 

April 11

Mark your calendar for the Cottage Food Safety Training to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. April 11 at the Coosa County Extension Office, 243 County Road 75, Rockford (at the former high school building in Hanover). Certification fee: $25. This training will help you understand the law, understand where foods can be sold, recognize labeling requirements, and understand basic food safety practices. April 13

New homesteading classes will be held twice monthly to help foster meaningful connections while learning how to integrate traditional practices with modern sustainability. Classes will be held at the Equality Volunteer Fire Department lodge adjacent to Jenny’s General Store. The next class will cover composting and gardening, and it will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13. The class is free, but attendees are encouraged to make a donation for the fire department towards the use of power and water. April 15

The monthly meeting for the Coosa County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors will be held on Monday, April 15, at 10 a.m. at the District Office located at 226 Coosa County Road 157 in Hanover.

 

April 20

The Coosa County High School Alumni Association will have its annual banquet on April 20. It will be held at the Rockford Event Center (high school gymnasium). Social hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Please bring a covered dish to share. Dress is comfortable and casual. When you arrive, please sign in. The class of 1974 will all be honored this year. We hope you will make plans to attend, and we look forward to seeing each of you.

 

April 27

Mule Day at the Weogufka Center will be Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Join us for a fun day of music, food, vendors, mules, Children’s Farm Center, and so much more! Admission is $5 per vehicle. For vendor or camper space call Melvin Palmer at 256-249-8885. Sausage biscuits will be sold beginning at 7 a.m. We will also be selling our fried apple pies!

 

May 4

AltaPointe will host the “Stepping up Together for Mental Health Awareness” event on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Central Blue Bell Park in Sylacauga. The event highlights May being Mental Health Awareness Month, and this event will be for people of all ages: children, adolescents, adults, and senior citizens. There will be live entertainment, food vendors, children’s activities, and numerous agencies that serve Talladega and surrounding counties will be setting up and passing out resources and information. May 18

May 25

The Equality Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its Memorial Day Fundraiser Boston Butt and Rib Sale. Boston butts are $35 each, and a rack of ribs is $30. The delivery date will be May 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the lodge next to Quality Food Mart in Equality. Can pick up Friday night. Weekly

The Goodwater Youth Development and Recreational Center is open to the public weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and practice days for the travel ball team are those same days from 5 to 6 p.m. Cheerleader practice is held on Wednesdays and Fridays. Monthly

The Friends of Flagg Mountain host a potluck dinner (bring something to share) with entertainment by local musicians on the First Friday of every month. The Coosa County Republican Party meets the fourth Monday of every month at the Coosa County E-911 building in Rockford with refreshments at 6 p.m. and the meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. For more information email coosacountyrepublicans@gmail.com.

Richville Neighborhood Watch will be held the first Thursday of each month at the fire department, 13185 Coosa County Rd. 14, Rockford, 35136. The gathering begins with a potluck meal at 6 p.m., and the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Come out and see what is happening in your community.

Beginning the second Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. Dana Sharpe, R.N., will hold informative meetings to cover medical issues and things to help prevent these problems. She will also cover resources available to citizens needing assistance in certain areas. Refreshments will be served and prizes given out. She will also cover Medicare related questions if you should have any. These monthly meetings will be held at the Kellyton Civic Complex Cafeteria, located at 145 Church Street in Kellyton. The first meeting will be held February 13, and the topic for this first meeting is Heart Disease since February is Heart Awareness Month. Make plans to attend. Quarterly

The Hanover Community Club and Neighborhood Watch will now hold quarterly gatherings at Andrews Chapel. These quarterly gatherings are held on the third Tuesday of March, June, September, and December at Andrews Chapel Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited and encouraged to attend.
