Literacy and fun were on the menu Monday, February 26, at the first community literacy event for parents and students of Coosa County. The event took place at Ed’s Deli in Goodwater. Participants were served a free meal of spaghetti and sides provided by Donna and Ed Calhoun, owners of Ed’s Deli.
Meg Masters, project director for Literacy Everywhere! grant, began the night by welcoming the guests to the event and explained the purpose of the Literacy Everywhere! grant, including providing free books for the children of Coosa County. She also explained that children get the message that reading is important and enjoyable when books and other reading materials are readily available at home. In addition, the grant also works to enhance the capacity of families to support literacy learning at home. The community literacy events are an opportunity to fulfill this grant objective.
Each family received a copy of the book “Pierre the Penguin” to follow along as Masters conducted a read aloud. Masters discussed how sharing books allows children to build language skills and encourages an interest in reading. After participating in the read aloud, each family worked together to find rhyming words from the story. Families then shared their findings with the group.
Following the literacy activity, participants enjoyed their spaghetti supper, complete with sides and dessert. Door prizes were also given out to attendees. Finally, students selected more books to take home for their home libraries.
Mrs. Masters would like to express her gratitude for Donna and Ed Calhoun for hosting the literacy event and providing the food. She would also like to thank Literacy Everywhere project assistant Maressa Ware for taking pictures of the event. Finally, she would like to thank the teachers from Central Elementary, Central High School and Coosa County Career Tech Center who volunteered their time to help with the event.
There are two more community literacy events scheduled for March. On Monday, March 4, the Triple R Cafe in Rockford sponsored the next community event. The final event will be hosted by the Weogufka community on Monday, March 11, at the Weogufka Center. All events are from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Supper will be provided at each event, as well as free books and door prizes. We look forward to seeing our families at the next community literacy event.
