Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Spring is in the air, but is it really here or is this just a hint? Sometimes I think we get a hint, then back to winter, then summer full on, and I would really enjoy at least a month of mild spring weather.
Time for spring cleaning, which means I need to gut and sort my pantry, but also continue to get some home renovations completed. I was able to get more done on our entryway, but it is still not finished, much to my dismay.
I am eager to update my garden; right now I am enjoying harvesting broccoli, cabbage and kale I planted in the fall. The cauliflower and brussels sprouts have not done so well, but I still hold out hope they will surprise me before spring planting begins. I also put in a small asparagus bed and am enjoying a small harvest there, as well – enough to have bacon-wrapped asparagus with our breakfast the past couple of Sundays.
I do need to plan my spring plantings for summer harvest and don’t want to duplicate what I am getting from Coosa Fancy CSA I am taking part in. Love their organically grown fresh vegetables. And I love supporting local small businesses, so a two for one win-win in my book.
Jenny’s General continues to expand their inventory selections with more Amish products including cheese, noodles and cider. Still waiting for Amish roll butter which has a production issue holding up orders, but hopefully soon. Cabinets are still out for repair, but bulk dried herbs are still available for all your needs, just look a bit awkward displayed on black tubs.
CJ’s Fishing Hole in downtown Equality has posted their spring/summer fishing season hours Tuesday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop in for your fishing needs. They have live bait, tackle and so much more. Follow their Facebook page for updates, and share your fishing success stories with them.
Friday, March 8, is Open Mic Night at Coosa Live (formerly known as Equality Performing Arts Center) which is tonight. Come enjoy an evening out enjoying live music. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Saturday, March 23, at 4 p.m. is Bingo at the Equality Volunteer Fire Department Hall on Highway 9. This is a fund-raising event to support the Equality Volunteer Fire Department. It is $1 a card and lots of fun, with concession sales. All proceeds support the EVFD, so come join the fun.
Saturday, March 28, is the next Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Please plan on attending an informative and enjoyable social event. You can bring a dish to pass if you like, but not necessary, as there is a community potluck because sharing food always goes well with gatherings.
