During its February meeting, the Board of Education reviewed and approved a lease agreement with the County Commission, as well as personnel and other matters.
With all members present, the board unanimously approved the lease agreement with the commission, which pertains to the use of office space at the former high school building for the Coosa County Extension Office. As reported previously, the commission approved the lease agreement at its last meeting, and it then went to the board for approval.
The Extension Office has been housed at the former high school location on a temporary basis, and the lease agreement extends the arrangement for one year.
The lease commenced on March 1 and ends on February 28, 2025, and there is no rent charged during the term of the lease. Instead, per the agreement, the commission will continue to be responsible for paying 25% of the utilities expenses and 25% of the “chiller expenses.”
The commission is also responsible for the Extension’s internet and telecommunication services, as well as all repairs and maintenance of the premises.
Regarding personnel matters, the board unanimously approved accepting a letter of resignation from Deanna Strickland, elementary school paraprofessional, which was effective February 13.
The board also unanimously approved acceptance of a letter of resignation from Michael McCain, high school in-school suspension paraprofessional, effective February 23. Board President Tiffany McCain recused herself from voting on the matter.
In other personnel matters, the board unanimously approved three individuals as substitute teachers/aides or lunchroom workers for the 2023-2024 school year, pending completion of requirements, which will be the orientation. Those approved individuals were Taylor Humphrey, Annette Looney and William C. Simmons.
Additionally, with a letter of recommendation from high school principal Brandi Lee, the board unanimously approved Phillip Carlisle as a community coach for the high school baseball team for the 2023-2024 school year. He will not be paid by the board.
In other business, the board unanimously approved “Proposed Calendar B” for the 2024-2025 school year. It was noted that all school personnel were given an opportunity to vote on three options, with Calendar B receiving the majority of the votes.
The board also unanimously approved:
- A service agreement with GFL Solid Waste Southeast LLC. to provide garbage pickup services for Coosa County Schools, which is for 10 dumpsters.
- A Joint Purchasing Agreement with Alabama Joint Purchasing for technology purchases, which is a reoccurring agreement and not new.
- Modification and Change Order Number 1 for the new athletic building and ADA upgrades for the high school, decreasing he cost of the contract by $1,012.98.
- A Memorandum of Understanding with the district attorney to enter into an agreement with Volunteers of America Southeast to utilize the Helping Families Initiative, which Superintendent of Education David Stover Jr. explained will work with students and families outside of school for students with attendance and discipline issues.
Also during the meeting, Board members were presented with certificates of appreciation for their service with and dedication to the Board. The certificates were in honor of School Board Member Recognition Month, which was January, but Stover wanted to wait until the February meeting to present certificates when all members could be present.
At the meeting it was also mentioned that many dead trees had been cleaned up at the baseball field and Career Tech Center, improving the area.
The next regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Board of Education will be held at 4 p.m. March 28.
