Following a request from the county, the state is now investigating an incident that occurred involving local law enforcement officers.
The newspaper office recently received reports alleging that two county deputies had been fired for “beating up a suspect.”
Upon contacting Sheriff Michael Howell about the allegations, he stated he had no comment, adding that it was under investigation, neither confirming or denying if deputies had been fired.
However, the state did confirm that it was looking into an incident involving two deputies with the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation, or SBI, on November 30, 2023, at the request of Sheriff Howell, special agents with SBI launched an investigation into “a use-of-force incident involving two deputies with the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office.”
Nothing further was available as the state confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing. Once complete, SBI’s findings will then be turned over to the Coosa County District Attorney’s Office.
