More precious than money

Many in our world view money as the most important thing in life. It has become a “god” to many. We need to wake up and learn what are really the most important things in life.
Sometimes it seems that our sense of values is distorted. Far too often we seem to value material things above spiritual things. Many today are putting first things last and last things first.
While it is true that money has value, its value is limited. As someone said: It can buy a bed, but not sleep. It can buy food, but not an appetite. It can buy a house, but not a home. It can provide amusement, but not happiness.
Proverbs 13:7 reads, “There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.”
In 2 Corinthians 6:10c Paul describes himself as “….having nothing, and yet possessing all things.”
The real value of money lies in what it can do for us and others. Tragically money does more to some folks than it does for them. Paul warns in I Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
We cannot afford to put our trust in money. There are many things more valuable than money. For example:
Physical life is far more precious than money. In Matthew 6:25-26 Jesus said, “….Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment. Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your Heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”
You probably wouldn’t trade your life for any amount of money. Yet some destroy their health for wealth and then spend their wealth trying to regain their health. Why do we put “making money” ahead of taking care of ourselves?
One’s soul is far more valuable than money. Jesus taught in Matthew 16:26, “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, & lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
How many are trading their souls for a few dollars which they cannot even take with them when they leave this world? The Bible says in I Timothy 6:7, “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” Our “soul” will live eternally!
A knowledge of the word of God is more valuable than money. The wise man wrote in Proverbs 8:10, “Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.”
Money is useful, and it is certainly not wrong within itself, but we must have the proper sense of values and always remember that knowledge is more valuable. Are you too busy to study the Bible? If so, then you are too busy! We must know God’s will in order to go to heaven.
In 2 Peter 1:5 we are encouraged to “…add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge.”
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever” (2 Peter 3:18).
“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:17).
