A Wetumpka man was arrested on six charges following a hit and run, pursuit and wrecking two additional times.
On October 21 deputies were dispatched to U.S. Highway 280 and County Road 131 for a call of a possible disabled motorist. While en route to the scene, they were advised that it was actually a hit and run and that the subject’s vehicle had left the scene driving along County Road 131.
The caller gave a description of the vehicle and the tag number. Deputies checked the area and later found a white GMC Sierra matching the caller’s description in the roadway, facing County Road 66.
A deputy approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver, immediately smelling a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver.
The deputy talked to the driver about the damage to his vehicle and explained that they were waiting for State Troopers to respond regarding the wreck. After a short while, the driver got back into the truck and drove off while a deputy was trying to hold onto him.
The deputies then got into a car chase with the driver, who wrecked two more times before coming to a stop.
While rounding a curve on County Road 66, because of his excessive speed the driver sideswiped a tree. He continued along the road and wrecked again into a rock embankment, ending the pursuit.
The driver, 28-year-old Andrew Scott Howitz of Wetumpka, was arrested October 21, facing a total of six charges.
Howitz was charged with reckless driving, attempting to elude police, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, resisting arrest, and failure to obey an officer.
His total bond for all six charges was set at $15,500, and he was released on bond October 23 to await trial.
