Coosa County Schools Mental Health Service Coordinator Tocarro Long recently led students to the Focus Rally at Shocco Springs. Focus is a student-led prevention program for adolescent risk behaviors. The goal of Focus is to provide students with the opportunity to engage in positive youth development activities and enhance their leadership skills so that adolescent risk behaviors may be addressed through project-based learning.
Students were able to acquire new skills for developing healthier habits. The rally kicked off with a motivating interactive speech from Dr. Laymon Hicks, “Reaching Your Potential: What’s Holding You Back.” Afterwards, students were separated into small groups to attend breakout sessions that included various topics such as: “Distracted Driving: Eyes Up, Phones Down; It’s the Law,” “Digital Destruction: How to Stay Safe in the Digital Age,” “HIV 101,” “Stress and Stress Management,” “Time to be Real: Mental Health Matters,” “Utilizing Community Based Mentorship to Advance Your Goals,” and “Vaping.”
This trip was made possible, at no cost to students, thanks to AltaPointe Health Center of Sylacauga along with generous donations from other sponsors. Thank you to PTO president Maressa Ware for serving as a chaperone and Ms. Long for providing this opportunity for our students.
