Union Square News
Ruby Johnson
Union Square’s Neighborhood Watch meeting last week was a winner for everyone, especially for Sherry Shaw and Jared Kilgore, winners of the neighborhood month. However, we all were winners to hear of the good news of things happening in our county.
Great things are happening in the Sheriff’s Office and the County Commission department for Coosa County’s own benefit.
Sheriff Howell completed participation in the 120th session of the National Sheriff’s Institute Leadership Development Course hosted at the FBI academy in Quantico, Virginia. Sheriff Howell was nominated to join 23 other sheriffs from across the country for training on effective leadership within the Sheriff’s Office, the local Criminal Justice System and their community.
This class will allow each sheriff to take back fresh ideas to apply to their agency and community relations. Sheriff Howell said he is grateful and is willing to do that for Coosa County. Now that is a good thing. Praise God. The class has also helped him to interact better on a personal level than just in law enforcement.
Union Square’s District 3 County Commissioner Brandon Davis was unable to attend the Neighborhood Watch meeting to share some of the commissioners’ and County Administrator Amy Gilliland’s achievements to help Coosa County, as well. However, they all were recognized and honored at the Association of County Commissions of Alabama conference with awards, completing professional development training.
Coosa County is moving higher. Let us move and get with it.
I remember former coach Joe Belyeu saying to me one night at a basketball game after he had retired – while waiting on the second half to start, as music was playing, Joe did a cool dance step, looked at me and said, “You got to get wit (with) it, Ruby,” with a big grin on his face. He put a big grin on my face because he is always serious at other games I thought that was so funny and cool to see Joe do that. We love you and your style, Joe.
So, Coosa County, let’s get with it, retired or not, and let’s move higher, with a grin on our face.
OK, back to the meeting. We welcomed our guests, Superintendent of Education David Stover Jr., Jamey Johnson, Revenue Commissioner Debra Lamberth who brought us good news to share, and Jodi McDade who honored 9/11 by wearing a shirt representing all the reasons. Sheriff Howell gave us the office’s report with some good information on which to meditate.
It was a very pleasant meeting. Everyone left with a smile. Jamey always keeps a smile on his face, a precious young fellow.
Once again Union Square is smiling for two of Union Square’s sweet sisters, Ophelia and Kaylyn Gould, CHS students of the month. Congratulations to you and all of the students of the month, Rachel Reams, Abigail Hyatt, Dylan Calhoun, and Alizabeth Cowart. Congratulations to CHS Teacher of the Month Derek Humphrey.
Jim Morton’s memorial celebration last Saturday was a beautiful one – one to remember as the true Jim himself, Second Chance.
Prayer list: Lady Mandy Hill, Woody Knight, Elaine Tuck, Joyce Taylor, and Pastor Adonis Thomas and his wife and family.
Happy birthday to Lady Vickie Hicks, Lady Brenda Davis, Jacob Thrash, and all September babies.
