Two were killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 12:03 p.m. last Thursday, July 27, the second fatal wreck within Coosa County in less than a week.
William L. Denny; 67, of Alexander City, the driver; and Frankie E.W. Armstrong; 59, of Titus, the passenger; were both fatally injured when the 2008 Honda Accord that Denny was driving collided head-on with the 2018 Western Star tractor-trailer driven by Augustus E. Gardner, 39, of Madison, Georgia.
Denny and Armstrong were both pronounced deceased at the scene. Gardner was injured and airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.
The crash occurred on Alabama Highway 22 near the 99-mile marker, approximately two miles east of Rockford.
Those who responded to the scene of the wreck were Coosa County Ambulance, Coosa County Sheriff’s Office, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Kellyton Fire and EMS, Rockford Volunteer Fire Department, Hanover Volunteer Fire Department, EMA-1, Lifesaver-4, Rockford Police Department, and Coosa County Coroner Jack Brewer.
Denny, who went by his middle name Larry, was born in Rockford and had attended school in the county. He also attended Ray Baptist Church in the Ray community of Coosa County.
Among others, Denny is survived by his sons, Michael Denny of Talladega and Mark Denney of Rockford, and his sister, Charlyne DeBardelaben of Rockford.
A memorial service for Denny will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery in Coosa County.
The passenger who was killed in the crash, Frankie Evon Watson Armstrong, was a resident of Titus and is survived by her daughters, Tiffany Whatley of Titus and Alyshia Lawrence of Wetumpka, as well as other family members.
A Celebration of Life service for Armstrong will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Whatley’s residence in Titus.
