Equality & NIxburg News

Our guinea hen is still on her nest, which seems to be the only bright spot of my summer. After hearing about several other cats missing in the area and the sightings of a fox and a coyote in broad daylight, I have concluded that my missing hen and missing cat have fallen victim to these predators.
I did have a young neighbor come into the store in distress with a small kitten that was near death. Its mother was missing, and the kitten was close to death. I took it in and used an eye dropper to get fluids in her until Rodger returned with kitten milk replacement. It took several hours, but she finally lifted her head. Two days on, and she is exploring our house. I hope this kitten stays as an indoor cat where she will be safe.
The garden has given plenty of cucumbers so far, and I’m finding different ways to prepare them from the usual cucumber salad, to fermented, to sautéed, to grated and added into bread. I did the same with yellow squash that was in abundance. Not sure what else I will be able to harvest; my trip took away what time I had to tend to it, and now it is overrun with invasive weeds.
It’s a hot and slow summer in Equality unless you spend your time on Lake Martin. Not a lot is happening in town right now – other than sweating while sitting on the front porch. But these days who does that? Stay indoors with the AC on and stay cool!
July’s Neighborhood Watch meeting is Thursday, July 27, at 6:30 p.m. Look for the new sign to be displayed as you drive on Highway 9 in the coming weeks. The meetings are informative, as well as a time to meet and greet neighbors and enjoy good eats potluck style.
Equality Performing Arts Center’s (EPAC) next event is “Open Mic Night” on Friday, July 14. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. The EPAC provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; call or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
