During its meeting Wednesday morning, the Board of Directors for the Coosa County Association of Scenic Waterways set a date and time for its first evening public meeting and further continued planning and preparations for the fall float of Hatchet Creek.
After some discussion and reviewing dates, the association board set July 20 at 6 p.m. as the public meeting, which will also be a membership drive. The meeting will be held in the conference room of the E-911 building in Rockford, and those interested in learning more about the CCASW, joining the association, participating in this year’s float, or interested in Coosa County’s waterways is encouraged to attend.
The association will provide light snacks and refreshments for the evening public meeting. During that meeting, guests can learn more about the association and will also have the opportunity to join the CCASW or register to participate in the Creek Run Festival.
Regarding this year’s float, board members reviewed a draft flyer for the event and made updates or corrections to it as they continued to further prepare and plan for the event.
The 2023 Creek Run Festival is a one-day float on Hatchet Creek to be held September 9. This year’s float is limited to 50 participants, and there will be at least five to six safety paddlers in the creek for the day’s event, as well.
Sign-ins will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, September 9, at Kings Bridge outside of Rockford, with take-out being at Double Bridges along County Road 29 in the Richville area. Currently it is planned for the participants to park at Double Bridges and be transported back to Kings Bridge for putting in.
Following sign-in, there will also be a safety briefing with safety paddlers before participants take to the creek. The CCASW is also seeking volunteers to help unload kayaks or canoes and equipment at Kings Bridge to help keep things running smoothly.
Upon taking out at Double Bridges, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy live musical entertainment along the creek.
The cost to participate in the Creek Run Festival is $30 per participant. Or those interested can pay $50 per participant to include chapter membership with the CCASW.
Those wishing to participate in the float can contact CCASW President Sheldon Hutcherson at 256-307-7495 or email coosawaterways@yahoo.com. Registration forms are available, and participants can send check or money order made payable to CCASW to P.O. Box 156; Rockford, AL 35136.
Additionally, the CCASW is continuing to offer tickets for a kayak giveaway in exchange for $10 donations per ticket. The Perception Pescador 10.0 kayak will be given away September 9, and the winner does not have to be present to win.
In Coosa County, tickets for the kayak giveaway are available at the E-911 office, Coosa County Extension Office in Hanover, “The Coosa County News” office, Triple R Cafe in Rockford, the County Commission office, and now also at the ALFA office in Rockford.
