During its June meeting, the Board of Education primarily approve personnel matters and other standard items relating to getting ready for a new school year.
Regarding personnel changes, the board unanimously approved acceptance of letters of resignation from high school special education teachers Savannah Holbrooks and Anita Williams, as well as from high school math teacher Cheri McDonald.
The board also unanimously approved accepting a letter of resignation from coaching for Debbie Phillips, who had served as cheer coach.
The board went on to unanimously approved hiring Scotty Mitchell as a special education teacher for the 2023-2024 school year, pending completion of all the requirements. With a majority vote, the board also approved Vernon Harmon as an assistant football coach to assist with the summer workouts, with Board Member Sharon Massie opposing the motion.
Regarding a certified transfer, the board unanimously approved the voluntary transfer for Jessica Adams from fourth grade teacher to math interventionist for the 2023-2024 school year.
In non-certified recommendations, the board unanimously approved hiring Priscilla N. Wood as a 10-month custodian for the 2023-2024 school year.
The board further unanimously approved contracts with numerous substitutes for the upcoming school year. Those included three custodian substitutes, three substitute lunchroom workers, 37 substitute teachers/aides, one substitute nurse, and four substitute bus drivers.
The board also unanimously approved a TEAMS, or Teacher Excellence and Accountability for Mathematics and Science, contract for Joseph Ethan Mynard, contingent upon completion of advanced credentials by July 31, 2024.
Also relating to personnel matters, the board approved an extra hour contract for paraprofessionals for the upcoming school year.
In preparing for the 2023-2024 school year, the board’s agenda for the June meeting included standard items brought up annually, all of which the board approved unanimously.
Those included contracting with First Response Pest Control for its services for the board’s facilities from July 1, 2023, until June 30, 2024; approving low bids from Allen Oil Company of Sylacauga Inc. for gasoline, bus diesel fuel and heating diesel fuel, effective July 1 through June 30, 2024; approving the low bid from Blossman Gas for propane, effective July 1 through June 30, 2024; and approving the low bid from Allen Oil for motor oil, effective July 1 through June 30, 2024.
In other business, the board unanimously approved and adopted a resolution establishing districts for members of the Board of Education.
In part, the resolution reads, “…the Coosa County Commission, whose members also run in districts identically numbered to those of the Board of Education, has re-apportioned the districts according to the last federal decennial census for the county using the principle of equal representation.”
The resolution went on to establish the Coosa County Board of Education districts “in accordance with the re-districting decided upon by the Coosa County Commission.”
The board also unanimously approved the 2023-2024 Code of Conduct for Coosa County students and a Ground Use Permit to be issued to Carson Cardwell, which will be for the use of the baseball field for an alumni baseball game fundraiser. The permit will be issued for July 18.
Also during the meeting, following some discussion, the board tabled hiring an individual as a special education teacher and tabled until July choosing three individuals from the county to serve on the Board of Equalization.
The next regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Coosa County Board of Education will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 27.
