A Birmingham woman was arrested late last month on drug-related charges following a traffic stop.
According to reports, Deputy Scott conducted a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 280 in Coosa County for speeding, with the driver being reported as driving 88 in a 65 mph zone.
Upon stopping the vehicle and making contact with the driver, Scott saw open containers of alcohol. He proceeded to conduct a search of the vehicle and found two bags containing a powdery-like substance that was found to be cocaine.
The driver, 26-year-old Daja Monique Harrison, was arrested on June 20 and charged with possession of a controlled substance (cocaine). She was transported to the Coosa County Jail, where ultimately two additional charges would be added.
While in custody and in the holding cell for the booking process, Harrison reportedly would not cooperate with the search procedure. It was believed that she was hiding something in her body, and as such the Sheriff’s Office planned to transport her to another facility the following day to have X-rays done.
However, that evening it was discovered that while in the holding cell, Harrison had hidden a bag containing 1.21 grams of marijuana, which she had in a body cavity, in the mattress of the cell.
Harrison was then further charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and promoting prison contraband.
Her total bond for all three charges was set at $12,500. She was released on bond June 28 to await trial.
Anyone who observes or suspects illegal activity is encouraged to report it to the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922 or online at www.coosacountyso.org. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
